After last years posting with a nice 70lbs GT, this year's trip was a bit of a let down.........No GT's

We finally got back on the island of Diego Garcia late May, it being a busy working trip our fishing was pretty much limited. Only had one opportunity to go offshore on a 4 hr charter for three ono's (wahoo) And I mean babies 7lbs, and (2) 5lbs. Before I had the chance to tell our boat captain to release, his mate had gaffed them and onboard in the cooler. It's not like me to keep such small ono, but these boat crews are in tuned to keep everything that is hooked, even tropical barracudas (sick!).

Three old dudes getting ready for our 4-hr charter. The boats were 28 foot Boston Whalers with twin 250 Merc's. In the pic, you can see how big the lagoon. The widest part is 8+ miles. It's about 40 miles from tip to tip.

    Bull shark.jpg

Oh, by the way, did I mentioned its shark-infested!! Bull's rule!! 3 years ago just before we arrived, island security noticed a big bull shark (10ft plus) cruising the shoreline for 2 weeks. One afternoon in 4ft of water, he decided it was meal time and attacked and killed a local worker. Shark disappeared right after. Many types of sharks frequent the waters but normally aren't a serious threat. Even giant Manta Rays!

At the end of our trip, we had a chance to fish the lagoon, which is always a favorite. You never know what you're going to catch. Thoughts of hooking up with GT's like the year before made anticipation exciting. As I mentioned early on, not this year. Water conditions were mid- light chop, winds plus 10mph, water clarity not the best. In the lagoon your able to rent 21ft Makos with 200hp Merc, bimini top, with a cheap hummingbird fish finder that didn't work. But for $16.00 an hour, it's a good deal!

So we headed out looking to fish the fuel pier and our favorite GT spots, but wind conditions got worse so we had to keep closer to shore for a bit. When the weather became favorable, we made it out to deeper water. The deep channel in the bay is over 125 feet, and some spots pushing over 150. Drifting cut ono belly and bonito belly, we were rewarded with some local catch: Largest grouper was 8 lbs, sweet lip snapper 8 lbs

My buddy Karl caught most of the groupers and a single sweet lip snapper for 10 total. I had a modest 3. Groupers in the bay will reach over 30lbs and snappers over 25lbs.

With high expectations and humbling results. It's fishing. Until September, looking forward to another trip to Diego Garcia BIOT!

I still remember catching a few very small fish in some far off places. Definitely the destination that makes it special.
