    Hi All -

New to forum, new to Barrett, new to bass fishing and re-new to fly fishing. 50-year hiatus, but two recent trips (both this year) to Bishop convinced me to get back to fly fishing. Have tickets (me & son-in-law) for Barrett Sept. Don’t own or want a kayak. Considering a float tube but haven’t yet pulled trigger. That leaves shore fishing.

Have spent hours reading forum threads. Think I fairly understand uniqueness of Barrett (remoteness, escorted entry, no barbed hooks, no baits, bring water/toilet paper, etc.). Have read and respect posts about tough terrain and rattle snakes.

    Questions:
    1. Shore fishing Pigs Point - waders recommended/required?
    2. Shore fishing boat dock - crowded?
    3. Not familiar with existing roads/trails/parking inside Barrett. Any suggestions for shoreline access in areas other than dock & Pigs Point? How to get there, where to park, path markers, etc. Even suggestions for good locations to bushwack own path.
    4. Understand most are not fly fishers, any suggestion bass flies welcome.

Very excited about prospect of bass on fly set up. Greatly appreciate guidance from Barrett experts.

very very limited shore fishing even more so for flyfishing
except for the arm at pigs where everyone launches their tubes
very little open space would be a lot of roll casting
by the dam is possible but steep and thick
its not a shore fishing lake

I have seen some fly fisherman reports but I think they are usually in the tube. I like fishing the dock with my son occasionally but always on non fly fishing gear. Not sure how difficult it might be fly fishing.

The shoreline is mostly deep soft mud (almost like quicksand) and very steep, I would not wade the shore. Barrett is a jewel of a lake to fish with a float tube, get a tube and you won't look back. Lots of people on this forum (including me) who would help you get started if you want. And you have plenty of time to test out a tube in a low current spot in the bay (low current for now until you get used to the tube). Fish in the bay are easy to catch and will respond to the same lures as bass in Barrett.

Wow! This forum is great. Total stranger posts and 4 responses in one day. Want to thank each of you and any others that choose to share further insights. Disappointed with the reality, but thankful for knowledgeable input. Special thanks to dmorgan3 for over and above input. Looks like time to pull the trigger on that float tube. Drawn to Classic Accessories Cumberland. I see there is a separate Float Tube forum. Will post there for insights/advice.

Have Barrett reservations for 09/12 & 09/26. Need to talk to son-in-law, but thinking pass and 09/12 and use time getting used to float tube. If decision made to pass on 09/12, will offer tickets (free) to those that respond to my original post. Will see.

Again thank you all for terrific (even if disappointing) input.

You won't be disappointed. Price points below $200 in some places.

I've been to Barrett four times since the opener and the bass have behaved uniformly the whole season so far. Hopefully the pattern will hold until your dates. A big chunk of the population is forming into schools and roaming open water, hunting baitfish. This has made for consistent action ranging from "steady pick" to "explosively good." I would think that trolling a clouser minnow, deceiver or any other streamer would produce great results. The fish have been everywhere from just offshore to the middle of the lake, cruising the surface over a hundred feet of water.

If for some reason you don't end up getting float tubes before your trips, I would fish on the dock itself. The fish schools have been vectoring in within casting distance of it every morning.

Very much appreciated your post. Most informative of all input received. After all the input, have decided to wait for boat rentals next year (hopefully). Have Barrett tickets for 09/12 and 09/26. Tickets are yours if you can use them. No charge. Not sure exactly how the transfer of tickets work, maybe you can provide directions. Let me know if you want them. Otherwise will list them on the Barrett Ticket forum.

Thanks for the offer but you should go ahead an post them on the Barrett Ticket Trader. Not sure what days I will be free plus I would only use 1 ticket. To transfer tickets, you just give the buyer the name the tickets are in, it's that simple.

But the word is that Barrett might not be renting boats next year. The float tube is still a good idea and you can also use it in the bay or fishing for trout in Eastern Sierra lakes like Crowley. And it can be great exercise if you go all over the place like many of us do.

I was not aware that Barrett might not be renting boats next year. Where did you hear this?

Based on excellent input received from Members, decided that Barrett is not for me at this time. Shore fishing seems out of the question. Thought about float tube but not ready for that yet. Not realistic to learn float tube in time to fish Barrett Sep 12. Likely will get float tube in future but will need one of those drill paddles.

Bottom line, I have tickets for Barrett for Sep 12 & Sep 26. Will make them available (no charge) on Barrett Ticket Trader forum tomorrow (Friday, Aug 21) at 1:00 pm. First come/first serve. One date per member.

Looking through the posts on Ticket Trader, sounds like adding name can be a hassle and not always successful. If anyone has had recent experience accomplishing the change, would appreciate input on getting it done.

Again, appreciate input from forum members. If boat rentals return to Barrett next year, hope to see you there.

    Thanks to all.

    Hey Gary,
As far as transferring tickets, You will be ok just giving your name to whoever uses the ticket, then they just give your name at check-in (to Jose or Laurie). Did that a couple times last season. You can also contact TM and ADD a name to the ticket. **Don't ask to transfer, it gets messy that way, much easier to just add a name.**

    From the Barrett page( Kellin):
To modify reservations (if you transfer/trade a ticket) you must call Ticketmaster Customer Service at 1-800-745-3000. You need to do that at least 24 hours in advance to be safe to make sure the change is noted on the sheet that the lake staff has the morning of the reservation date. Ticketmaster sends them that information the afternoon prior
