Is it possible? Recently moved from Colorado and I really miss mountain camping on state land in the middle of nowhere on a reservoir.. and for free...
I would really love to find a place where my wife, pup, and I could camp on the beach. Ideally somewhere somewhat less crowded and with tent camping and surf fishing.

What does everyone know of? Or recommend? Appreciate the advice
    Kyle

free camping on the beach, food and great people near by castros camp or the town for tacos and fresh food .
great surf fishing and a beach to your self , tide pools to sit in on high tide the town of san vincente is not far.

Not the beach, but the IV has all the free camping, fishing, etc you could ask for... Wrong time of year for going out there, 115 degrees tomorrow, lol. A hundred miles east of San Diego, no crowds, etc... Otherwise, Baja is the place.. BOL

In 2007 I spent 3 months in Baja surfing and fishing from shore and my board. Best time of my life ! But I don't know how safe the campsites are nowadays or I would wholeheartedly recommended it Paradise!

Doheny Beach, right below Dana Point Harbor. I grew camping and fishing there. Not like it used to be but close. Try to avoid “big” weekends, you will need reservations. Great for kids, great for wives, great for you!

San Onofre State Beach, south of the nuclear power plant.
They have tent sights I believe on the beach, but I'm not sure anymore. Long time ago I think that they did. You can call to find out.
We've set up tents in the regular camping sites. Reservations need to be made in advance. About 1/4 mile hike down the trails to the beach. Beach is pretty much empty. Here's some pictures from last August.

Sorry, pictures that I posted last year now say that they are too large.
I'll try to resize them latter.
It's not a fancy camp site, very very basic.
    But the beach is nice.

Here's the pictures, there was a dog there also.
The vehicles on the beach were for a surfing contest that they were setting up.

San Onofre State Beach is the old Highway 101. Silver Strand is a big parking lot. You can back your camper right up to the sand. When we lived in Chula Vista we used to go there all the time.
