Yep… best one of the year. Sorry for the yellow, but it is recognizable and small enough to be over fished. No idea on weight or length but definitely my PB. Swam free today.

    That’s a pretty fish.
Congratulations. What did you catch it on?
W/ all due respect, if you intend to release a fish, I’d recommend trying to keep your fingers out of its gills. They’re pretty delicate.
    Best regards,
    JD

I understand he was moving around way to much, ideally I would have had my net, but it was a unexpected catch (live lined anchovy snagged by a LC) anyway he swam off good no bleeding on his part

Great idea! I Too love tossing LCs, but not so much around rocky areas. I've lost too many of them to snags. Catching a WSB is on my bucket list. I believe they're more common around mixed reef areas and in and around Kelp. Looks like you're fishing in a pretty rocky area, is that correct?
That fish must have been fun on that light outfit.

This guy was sitting on a drop off next to some structure, but this is actually is not a WSB its a huge Short Fin Corvina.

I’m big on replacing the trebles with single hooks, a lot less hangups.

    Cool,
Thanks for the correction. That seems to be a common question here, i.e., determining between the two.

Fangs, fin (dorsal), belly 'zipper' are the identifiers to keep in mind between the two

Im sure if you handled it ok and held it without fingers in actual gils (just gil plate or jaw grab) that it lived just fine after release

Eat that bad boy. One of the better eating fish around. Yeah yeah… I know. Unpopular opinion on the matter for this particular species.

The minute one of those hits a dock, rock, shore, your hand etc, the death warrant has been signed, whether an hour or 72... Nothing wrong with tossing one that has been hard done by in the frying pan.. This really should be a no brainer. It's just not that complicated...

Coach, you know where I stand on the matter. Hooking and handling in any way almost seals the deal. It’s either you or the other critters that gets a meal out of it. For such a ferocious looking fish it’s extremely delicate and bites the dust damn near when you look at the thing. Just cuz it swims off doesn’t mean it it won’t be a floater after a few minutes or hours. But… wtf do I know? Or you, you moron. Hahahaha jk

Fish22 don't listen to those crusty old farts, that fish made it just fine. Just keep your hands out of their actual gills like YNW_FISHY said, and next time and don't take so many pics. It's the little ones you gotta worry about going belly up occasionally. Respectfully most these guys with opinions don't even target corvina.. Plenty of studies from all the gulf states showing the catch and release mortality rates on sea trout and they all show them as suitable to catch and release. I mean to me this is the real common sense. Corvina are basically sea trout without the spots. I didn't even have to find a study, here's a statistic I pulled right from Google. To me a mortality rate of only 23% does not make a fish a pansy especially when you are taking about fish coming from a tournament.
