This ain’t no corvina. Beautiful fish, nice fight. Caught in north county by Carlsbad

was safely released after the photo. White Sea bass

if you've ever seen a WSB in the surf let me know. I know it's possible but I've never heard of anybody catching one up close and I've also never caught one surf fishing (until now)

Not a common, but not that rare either from what I know. They’re definitely easier to find farther out at depth, but we’ve caught them off the pier in Oceanside before. Not too much farther out.

Very nice catch from the shore for sure!

All the time lol. It's where the juvies spend most of their time. I've had some pretty wide open bites on the little ones before, much smaller than yours though.

There is a WSB hatchery in one of the lagoons up off the I-5 past Legoland. Our fishing club had a tour years ago. I surmise they release them nearby when their ready to go.

Ha funny citruspirate , I also caught three in one session last year. Only time I’ve caught them but ran into a little school.

Definitely a rad catch and pretty rare, but not quite a unicorn either. Now a legal in the surf... that’s a life goal... and probably more likely to happen in LA county from what I know.

They are spectacular to watch when on the hunt . I have seen schools of what had to be 30 to 50 lb fish , Mauarding in knee deep water at full speed . I guess after corbina or croakers as prey . Even in that shallow of water they barely made a ripple . Nice catch always fun to see . They are really pretty . Add before it was heavily developed Punta Banda Baja was very productive for adult fish from the surf . WR

28....inches.... said as the store manager did in "Elf" when he said 6 inch curls. Not calling out anyone as ayopierre said he released. It just came to mind trying to remember size if I ever catch one.

When I dive out in La Jolla and Malibu I see plenty of younger WSB in extremely shallow water.

Not big schools like corbina but still enough of them that I see one or two while making my way out of the surf.

They usually are darting around very quickly though, they aren't drifting around like the corbina do

I see them almost every year, hunting around in the shallows. Shot some video in summer 2019:

Inshore White Seabass San Diego - July 2019 - YouTube

Fish the areas with rock and sand. They're usually short, but have managed a few legals. I know someone got a 38 lb. seabass from the rocks in the Bird Rock area before the 2012 MPA closure. Below, a couple from the beach around here on dropshot plastics:

In my misspent youth I got half a legal wsb off the OB pier, outside the surf line. And I seem to remember seeing a guy get a short one at the southern edge of Del Mar....
