I haven’t posted in a while, had to take a break from fishing for health reasons. Have been going out everyday to walk near Seaport Village. Frequently crowds gather just north of Seaport Village where the commercial fishing fleet marina is located. Before today, the crowds were always watching crew members on the commercial boats feeding a sea lion.

As I approached today, a big crowd had gathered but I did not hear the usual barking of the sea lion. I also noticed it was the adult males who were the most excited which was unusual. I reached the area where the crowd was and could not figure out what they were looking out. The problem was I was looking too far away. Then something in the water just 5 feet from shore caught my eye and it was a big Dorado cruising the shoreline.

I was shocked as I have never seen or heard of anyone catching or seeing Dorado in the bay, let alone 5 feet from shore. A couple of the guys from the commercial fleet were able to drift a small boat to where it was cruising back and forth and they got it!

Here is the picture. Enjoy! Happy holidays and tight lines to everyone!

Every couple years a few pictures or videos show up of tuna, dodos, etc trapped at the beginning or end of the season in the back of one harbor or another.. saw a few pix years back of a spearfish grabbed by hand from the fuel docks at Dana Point...

Knew snagging with rod and reel was legal in saltwater. Don't know why I didn't associate gaffing with snagging.
Learned about snagging with treble hooks for halibut when I started fishing at North Island. Lots of the older gents would have snag lines with flags set up at the pier. Was really hard to find a spot to cast from.

The fish looked healthy, good color, went absolutely berserk when they gaffed it.
