I going out for bigger mackerel and was wondering what bait help target bigger mackerels. In my experience, they eat anything in sight, but I get smaller ones with bigger ones. Are there any baits that help to weed out the smaller mackerel?
    Thanks,
    Leo

    Mak strips or shrimp

Use a size 8 sabiki if you’re targeting maks. When you get one hooked, leave him on for a short bit before pulling up.

Many times you’ll get another on the same pull.

If you want bigger ones only I would throw a larger kastmaster the smaller ones will still hit it.

Use whatever you use for smaller ones, just bigger. Always had luck catching maks with strips of squid. Maybe try a big strip or half a squid.

What is YOUR definition of “bigger Mackerel?” Chub Macks but bigger? Bigger species? Purpose? I’m guessing lobster bait...

I seem to attract nothing but macks on my larger swimbaits when hitting HI or SI at night. Had decent quality on them in the past, thats for sure.

One oz krok .. will tend to be better quality. You will still get some small ones tho too, just not as many

Just bigger chub mackerel, for shark and lobster bait. I always seem to get small mackerel and was wondering if I could get a big mackerel head for shar bait or a big mackerel for lobster. I have only seen one big mackerel, when a friend of mine caught a giant 2-3 pound mackerel on a surface iron while barracuda fishing.

Are you catching these on sabikis? I usually don't find these types of fish in my bait tank when I buy livebait

I usually catch baby smelt with an umbrella net and bread as bait. With my Sabiki, I end up with smaller Macks. I usually get bigger Macks on a LC 110 flash minnow.

Use size 12 hook sabiki. Or make your own rigs with light line and size 12 single egg hooks. Tiny hooks. Shrimp as bait helps, cut Mac works too.

Drifting in 200' of water, we floated past a small school. My friend and I each caught 2. All 4 were identical in size. We did not weigh them, but they were 18'' long. We were after rockfish, out of Dana Point and using whole frozen chovies. They put up a very good account of themselves. I never thought I would catch macks @ 175' down.

The problem is, as far as I know, the size & depth is a rarity.
