A friend planned to visit with their kids, so I went out and get a jar of 1” gulp alive minnow along with #6 hook. Planed to use that under float for the kids to have fun and I don’t like to touch earthworm.
End up, they couldn’t make it so I had fun with it myself dropshot them deep and shallow. This catch anything big and small but it only last a few fish and hard to use with jig head. 83BB653F-AB23-4199-A3F6-5C82EC127CE7.jpeg B9CC5D0C-CBDE-490A-B7C4-07BE92714D50.jpeg A69C0915-668E-4340-869F-75979DB63915.jpeg FCAF6F9F-3663-43D9-A38B-B1020C02C6B4.jpeg 52794E68-AF22-409D-B23D-1DAFDEFAE8AA.jpeg EE888B50-E38A-4B74-89A4-6ABAE1BE27B8.jpeg 8573BD70-ADF0-4C19-BE29-2511F723C9A7.jpeg

Gulp on a drop shot is killer for bluegill at Barrett but technically not legal since it is scented. And bass will drive the bluegill away and grab the Gulp too. Stuff smells like a cross between bad breath and BO though. Any shape works for bluegill as long as the bait size is small; 2" sand worm is a nice size.

Please explain "technically not legal". Is that technically not legal like trolling motors, or technically not legal , like you're screwed if you get caught with it? Thanks.

Scented or flavored baits are not allowed at Barrett Lake per Fish and Game regulations but lots of people use Gulp, Powerbait worms and other scented soft plastics; never heard of anyone being checked for it. I say "technically" since it is not enforced at all.

1.11. ARTIFICIAL LURE. Any manufactured or man-made non-scented/ flavored (regardless if scent is added in the manufacturing process or added afterwards) device complete with hooks, intended to attract fish. Artificial lures include, but are not limited to; spoons, spinners, artificial flies, and plugs, made of metal, plastic, wood, or other non-edible materials.

Can't say I have any respect for that rule considering live bait use. Don't see the point.

The wording has been the same for years, not sure how long. May have even predated scented plastic worms. Not to worry, Fish and Game has never asked to smell my worms. Would certainly be meant to apply to carp dough balls, catfish stinkbait, trout Powerbait and the like. But the Gulp is so effective that with bluegill you should use long shanked hooks and have a good hook remover tool as they will swallow it deep if you don't set the hook real fast. .
