Assembly bill 2443 is on the desk of Governor Brown.

Assembly bill 2443 will double the boat registration from 20 to 40 dollars to raise cash to fight off the mussel attack.

$20 for 2 yrs boat registration in California is ridiculously low. It's a wonder they didn't raise it eons ago.

I do not think kayaks pay registration fees.

Since there is no known cure for the mussel problem, the only other front against this "attack" is more regulation. That means mandatory boat wash-downs, more inspections and inspectors. All this amounts to more $$$ from us, the fishermen. Many feel the mussels are already in virtually every body of publicly-used fresh water in So Cal.

Think about the millions spent trying to erradicate the fire ants in the south. It has done nothing to keep them from spreading, maybe slows them down some which I am grateful for, certainly don't want them in my yard, but is it worth the money if it is just wasted? Same thing with the zebra mussells, now the quagga's. Just another lost cause to throw money at in my opinion, sort of like the government studies on cow farts contributing to global warming

Fight off the mussels my ***.

It's just another tax / fee increase to give them more money to spend elsewhere else.

Like fisheromen said, there really is nothing at this point that we can do aside from trying to use chemicals to kill them (and pretty much everything else in the lakes), and 'study' their progress.

I don't think effectively doubling the amount of money they're going to collect is going to get them to a solution faster than the money they have now. Plus, I HIGHLY doubt all of that money is going to go towards 'helping the fight' given California's AMAZING ability to manage it's funds.

And with what Roy said, it's THOSE kind of cow fart 'studies' California is going to do! Pretty soon they're going to say Zebra / Quagga mussels are going extinct around the world and we need to keep the colonies we have here in the US alive, then they're going to stop fishing outright. (Over exaggeration obviously, but I wouldn't put it past the rocket scientists who run this state!)

I catch the mussels at Lake Dixon. The Rangers told me just throw them in the trash can.

Last year on the cnn.com that the government spent 750 million studying cow farts to see it cause global warning. LOL.
