IMO It's close! I can manhandle a 10lb yellow at deep color but that's when the bones seem to turn up the heat.
I won't kick either one off my line lol
Good eating as well. . if treated properly
In my experience, no fish I've ever caught/hooked has the survival instinct and will to live than a Yellowtail.
If there is kelp, they will purposely dive in it and even get tangled in it to break you off. If there are rocks, they'll dive for them and break you off. I've never lost more of one type of fish in my fishing career, than a yellowtail.
Just my opinion
aquaholic I love bonito, great game fish and table fare. Honestly all the small tunas are great. The little black skippies, bullet and frigate tunas I catch down south fight like crazy for their size. Not many fish that small that can pull drag off a 9/0.
Forgot about the skippies down south, they're at the top of the list as well
Agree 100% they are way smarter and are responsible for my most losses as well but would love to hook into a 50lb bone for reference!
You must not fish for some of the bigger groupers very often, or the big pacific AJ/cavalla/trevally in some places .. Lol.. More breakoffs for me than any other on those by far.. Blue jacks in central am seem to know where every sharp thing is too....
All the jacks fight great, but roosters and crevalle fight the best imo. Green jacks the pacific version of a blue jack are also great fighters and are such a fun fish on light tackle. Roosters are special though, they are very picky and hard to hook. I still haven't caught one, they always out smart me. That will be one of my goals for this summer. Ill beat my grandpa with any fish except for the rooster.
I remember catching one maybe 5 years ago on some reasonably light tackle a little bit north of Rocky Point in Cholla bay. That was some exciting stuff for sure. Maybe I can dig up the picture.
Wow a rooster that far up north?
Yeah, my uncle's caught a few there over the years. I've heard of a couple being caught off the new jetty they put in.
Most the ones up there are pretty small, but mine was maybe 15-20 lbs.
There is a vid on YouTube of some guy catching an AJ with penasco in the background, pretty sure. . 15 lb pez gallo is a fun one.. Not big enough to feel like work, but enough to give you a good run for the money..
Haha the funeral for the drag was soon to follow. Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
imo nothing will break you up like a sardinera and nothing fights as hard. Using 80 lb to catch 8 pounders cause they'll break you off 2 seconds after you hook em in the rocks lmao
Grouper is a whole different game, those guys can fight.
lb for lb I say peacock bass, but I also think spotties are up there
Lol if spotties could get as big as calico's
no but think about it, 50 lb spottie, rest in piece drag
