There be bass in Calaveras Lake, but it is completely surrounded by tulles. You may need a float tube and a six pack of Budweiser to catch bass in that lake...

You definitely need a tube to fish Calavera. I used to try the shore on my lunchbreaks occasionally when I worked in the area. Pretty useless, only resulted in a couple of small fish.

I have heard there are big fish in there though.

From what I understand, you were able to float tube it in the past but I've heard with all the development in the area some people have been told they can't (by people with limited credibility). I haven't seen any signs posted or anything.

I haven't heard a definitive answer, but let's just say I'd do it until either somebody proved I couldn't, or I got hassled to the point where it got to me.

I have never been there with enough time to launch to tube, but from what I've seen there I doubt you'd get hassled. If you did, it would probably just be somebody telling you you can't be there, and even then I'm not sure I'd believe them.
