Funny this thread comes back up. My plan for tomorrows shore pounders meetup is to use non traditional things I find in my fridge and pantry as bait. I'm both curious to see what works, and it would amuse me to no end if I could win the daily contest fishing with something strange, like a pickle for instance.

It'd work well. Hot dogs are natures candy, fish love it.

As a kid I used to cut strips of hot dog and T-Rig them, they worked pretty well from what I remember.

Before I discovered the magical sabiki, I used to use tin foil to catch macks and would get bass too.

Fresh, mostly at Santee while I was growing up there living at the campgrounds. I used to fish with a kid that used the first "wacky rig" with a slice of hot dog. He gave me my first baitcasting reel and a bag of plastics then taught me how to fish, we had weekly fishing tournaments between local kids almost every weekend back in the mid 90's. Found out about two years ago that one of them is now a deckhand on the Chubasco II, great guy.

I have a crazy calico story... Once I was fishing with my father and he hooked up to a nice calico in La Jolla, it was around 4 pounds. As he was pulling it up 3-4 calicos were trailing him. I had a rod in my had and a swimbait tied on which was dangling about 3 feet out of the water as I was watching him pull in his fish. Before I knew it one of the bass left the group came 20 feet below the surface and jumped out of the water eating my swimbait. I held the rod and he smoked drag for 15 feet or so before I pulled him in. When they are schooled up they are like a kamikaze I guess

Right now is h perfect time if you want to see some large calicoes in La Jolla, fish stalks and around canopies you'll find some donkeys schooling for sure.

I used to dropshot a bright orange earplug for various Alaskan fish when I was a guide up there - can't imagine it wouldn't work for bay fish.
