Hey everyone, hope you’re having a great day. I’m here in San Diego for 4 more months. I’m a dedicated angler with plenty of tackle. I’ve gotten some decent bass since living here but I’m determined to catch a true California giant! I plan on throwing big baits mostly. Any advice on what lake or what baits I should commit to to help my dream come true would be awesome! Also if anyone wants to go out trophy hunting, let me know! Tight lines everyone!

Wrong time of year! Look at the list of Giants and notice the dates they were caught.

Right now I’d have to say DVL

But February through May are the best windows of opportunity almost always.

And late September to November you can catch a lot of bigger fish on reaction baits but not as giant as the spawning season but a 25lb bag is not out of the realm of possibility

Queue , our resident fisheries biologist, has said Lake Morena is your best bet at catching a teener these days. Not a big population of bass in there, but some very big ones. It's a grind in the spring time let alone now, but good luck!

Giants are unicorns anymore. Morena is your best bet but these are probably the worst next couple of months to catch a giant there. Maybe by mid November. Hodges might also get you close to a DD but it closes in October. Both are super snaggy so keep that in mind in regard to bait choices.

DVL and Skinner have a high probability of 5-8 lb class fish right now but DD’s are rare for now. Everywhere else for the most part are over run with 1-5 lb C&R clones.

What do you consider a giant?

Spring in any of our lakes, and spend time on the water as much as you can, I have caught most of my bigger fish lately in the summer. Hodges, Wohlford , Elcap will give up big fish in the summer pretty consistently, Otay as well. Granted all my big fish have come just fishing, not targeting big fish.

I'm surprised no one has cuyamaca during the pre - spawn, those bass in there are HUGE. I've seen people catch 13 pounders on big trout swimbaits.
