Does anyone know of any places that are relatively close that allow camping & target shooting? I just want to plink with a .22 for fun. The wife wants to camp around trees so the open desert is not an option. I know of several places in AZ but I'd like to find a place close enough for a quick weekend getaway.

The US National Forests within the borders of Ca are all shut down/ closed . You will have to look into BLM or Private areas . Do you have 4x4 transportation ? If so your options are much better . How far are you willing to drive ? WR

I don't need to go right now so I'm not concerned about the closures. I can wait until everything opens back up. I don't have a 4x4, just a 2x4 F150. I'm hoping to find something within a 3-hour drive. Any further and I might as well head out to AZ or the sierras for a week. Maybe there is something around Cuyamaca? Or Palomar? or Idyllwild? Or even Big Bear?

Google map search "Plaster city" or "Ocotillo" and follow some of the roads north and scout around. You will find lots of areas that will look suitable for both camping and shooting. Just check BLM maps to make sure youll are within the boundaries. I have taken a Ford Focus up there by a 4x4 will get you to "better" places.

Not a lot of "long range" shooting but plenty of areas to take 100yrd shots.

Wait just noticed the trees thing. There used to be some ranges near Temecula but no camping there.

Painted gorge is a cool camping spot. You can shoot there.
