I know this topic has been discussed and there’s a handful of you guys that fish out there regularly. But I’m going to be Indio this weekend at my brother in laws and wanted to try to get on some fish, would be amazing if it was smallies. Does anyone know of any canals or spots I can legally hit that would be worth my time from that end of the valley? (Coming from Indio) Thanks!

Not much to it. Just cast, move, cast, move.. Easy as pie. Traditional wisdom would suggest to start at the northern end of the east highline and fish your way south, hitting every feature you possibly can, no matter how small. Anywhere water or air enters or exits the canal, anywhere the water slows, stops or speeds up can hold fish. Based on my limited bass experience in the desert, I feel the best smallmouth lure is a buzzbait (I am not a bass fisherman, so take my advice as intended). Long casts may be required anywhere the water is clear..

If you follow Werfless’ suggestion to fish the East Highline take Hwy 111, not the Hwy 86 Brawley Bypass to get to the EHL. Turn left on Main in Niland and you will end up at the Highline Extension just before you enter Slab City. Follow the canal south and it will turn into the EHL which will go almost all the way to the Mexican Border where it comes off the All American Canal.

No required but a good idea is an AWD vehicle. I know nothing at all about bass fishing but been up and down that stretch from the 78 to the 8 several times. I run an Outback and feel far more comfortable in that than in my old 2WD pickup.

See a fair number of turtles where the west running canals tap into the EHL. Not all are running so closed ones provide some still water.

There are pipes in spots usually about 20-50 yards from the tap canal that suddenly whoosh and beging dumping water back into the EHL.

Some Cottontail rabbits out there too

Thanks you guys! I’ll have my Tahoe that has 4WD and I have it built for that kind of trek. I just wanted to clarify, it’s 100% legal of me to get off the highway and drive right along side the canal and stop as I’d like?

Just don't block the road. Stay on the west road, although there is an east road it don't look like much.

Depends the flow level but some stretches the water can be far below the bank.

Yea I have. I get it. I’m not going to go anywhere I shouldn’t or where signs say no. I just wanted to be 100% sure to make the drive worth it. Didn’t want to drive all the way out there and be disappointed. Thanks everyone for your help!

Disappointed? How? If a guy that knows zero about bass fishing can catch three decent bass in five minutes (or nine in forty), you should be able to absolutely put the wood to em if you have any idea at all... Just don't spend an hour on unproductive water.. A few minutes at most without getting bit.. At most. Keep moving and casting and you should absolutely put the hammer down..

Thanks for the offer... I do get down that way (Ocotillo Wells) during the winter (Sand toys), but it's tough getting away from the family to do any fishing... I'll have to give it a try sometime, with my Grandson.... The only thing he likes better than riding dirt bikes, is fishing.... And maybe girls, now.:emoji_wink:....

Let me know, Butch.. There is a pretty decent bass/flathead/striper spot not too far from the OHV area. Would love to put you and the young blood on a couple

I didn’t mean disappointed as in the fishing results. What I meant was by not being able to find or access water at all to make the trek worth it from that end. Thanks for all your help. I’ll post a report afterwards.

When you go hit me up. I may buzz out there with you. I have been wanting to go out there as well. I would make it an over nighter for me.

Cool I’m going to discuss it with my wife this afternoon to make sure she is ok with it and then the plan was to get to the canal at first light Sunday morning and spend a few hours hitting it. I’ll hit you up.
