Its kind of similar to what you'd need for any sort of beach fishing. Decide what rig you want to use, what bait, and go from there. Guys now are starting to use sandcrabs but gulp worms still work, a drop shot rig with squid or crabs, or if you can find them ghost shrimp will do well too.

I've never fished carlsbad, but do a lot of surf fishing and i prefer regular head on shrimp from the supermarket. I usually bring some mackerel or other cutbait as well and sometimes that works better, but shrimp works and works well for a wide variety of species. I've never had as much luck with the gulp worms as some others have.
I like a longer rod that casts well in order to reach further out structure and give fish more time to find the bait.

I am actually looking at 8’+ salmon rods (“fast tip”, medium action) or can i get by with my 7’ med action setup and learn how to use it in SD surfs? I have a 8’6” med. action salmon rod and never thought to bring it. I’ve done “meh” with the 7’ , I just see a lot of fisherpeople use longer poles.

You can catch fish with a 7. I use a 9' ugly stik gx2 medium moderate fast and think the extra casting distance helps. Don't always get bit at the end of long cast, but often farther out than i could get with a 7, atleast at some of the spots i frequent. Another benefit of the longer rod is to keep some more line out of the water to keep the salad off the line.
Definitely read some of the reports from people who have success at whichever area you're planning to fish. K-Bo Smack and some other guys post some good north country reports.

Do you use the whole shrimp on the hook or just pieces and some chum?

He does something similar to me, chunks on a smaller hook. I have had the pleasure of fishing with him a few times and was pretty surprised at the similarities..

Thank you sir, likewise. Yep usually cut a shrimp into 4 baits, chum the head and tail. Chumming doesn't always lead to success but i figure it's good fishing karma, sometimes i feed the fish and sometimes they feed me.
I picked up the smaller hooks thing from Werfless and it works..both for fish with smaller mouths like perch ect, and for the 4lb surf bass. Small bait and small hook equals when the fish takes the bait they almost never miss the hook..

I figured but when he mentioned head on I thought he might be using the whole shrimp, I tried that once and it didn’t work for me. Thanks

Sounds totally bizarre, but I swear they do something to the shrimp after they behead them. Dunno of it's washing, bleaching, rinsing... But something. They aren't as sticky as whole shrimp, don't have the same smell or feel, and don't seem to work as well for me either.. Just one crazy guys' opinion
