Cabrillo mole is a good spot. If you can chum, absolutely deadly there, mussels, shrimp shells, etc. Sometimes the pleasure pier has some decent whitefish sometimes too. The jetties and other piers can be good, but you have to pay attention to the MLPA boundaries. Make sure you know where you can and can't fish.. for plastics, not sure what to tell you

The mole is the best place to fish in Avalon. Traditional baits for your target species will work, swimbaits/grubs/jerkbaits for bass, small jigs like colt snipers/megabaits for bonito, small surface iron a longshot for yellowtail. Small lures on light line will get the most bites but maybe not the biggest. If you are fishing from the beach double check the MLPAs and go exploring for areas you like, there are a range of areas from pebble rock beaches, sandy beaches and rocky drop off areas all within a long walk or short ride from Avalon. match your lure or bait rig to the area and conditions and should have some luck. looking forward to the report.

The island is filled with aquatic life. You’ll see calicos dart in and out of the structures from shore. Like coach said: Just make sure you know where the MLPAs are.

Here’s my report from last year. Let us know how you do!

It's been a dozen years since I was there..but I wanna go back.

Good fishing right there in town....Avalon. Casting small plastics from shore, fishing on anything but an incoming tide was a waste of time.

Caught a bunch of small calico bass in the Avalon area. Couple of legals mixed in, topping out at 3 pounds. Of course, no photo of that one, but check out the structure visible in the nice clear water here:

The pic doesn't show the surge from the waves. Kelp is always moving in and out, and you kinda have to hit a spot so your lure can sink a couple of feet, miss the swaying kelp, and get close enough to the rocks or kelp to get the fish to shoot out and grab it. And you can SEE it happen.

When I go back, I will take a ton of cheap ball heads and swimbait heads, and as many 3-4 inch curlytail grubs and fishtrap style lures as I can carry. I'll use 8 or 10 lb test this time, not 6. I will fish all over the cove at Avalon, from Casino Point on the left over to the mole (concrete pier) on the right. Tennis shoes make it easier to get down the concrete-covered riprap.

You cannot fish at Casino Point (it's a no-take MLPA. It's the purple area on this map.) Once past Casino point, shore fishing is allowed out around Descanso Beach. I caught nothing from the structure around Descanso Beach, but that was also during the falling tide, so...

Just past Casino point, this happened.

The plaza you can see in the next pic is right on the edge of the MLPA as you are walking past Casino Point. I would go past it, and fish wherever you can access..accessing the water's edge is tougher in that area. In the background, you can see the Descanso Beach area (it has a nice snack bar).

Now look at the map again. If you head to the right from town, there is the mole (concrete pier). It borders the blue area (Lover's Cove) . You CAN fish there, casting from the mole. Here's this year's regs: https://www.dfg.ca.gov/m/MPA/Regulations

    (128) Lover′s Cove State Marine Conservation Area.

    (B) Area restrictions defined in subsection 632(a)(1)(C) apply, with the following specified exceptions:

    1. The recreational take by hook and line from the Cabrillo Mole is allowed.

and any pics below this are just webglitches...

you're welcome. Seriously, take a bunch of lures. Snaggiest place ever. When I was there we literally ran out. Only one store in town had any little plastics for sale; a few packs of some storm bait knockofffs...and we cleaned 'em out. and only had a couple left at the end of the long weekend. Have fun....
