Swiped at my hook up bait and got it hooked on the full plate. Haven’t caught one of these before. Are they rare?

Not rare.. I personally rarely catch them during daylight.. between the pliers grip on the jaw and gill hooking the poor guy I hope he found his way to the frying pan or cut up for bait ...

I like to take shrimp.. works great for whitefish and sheephead, of course rockfish and bass eat it too.. use a smaller hook, like size 2, and a peeled chunk of shrimp, deadly.. if the perch are robbing you, scale down to size 6 or 4.. live bait is king for the big fish though, depends on what you want to do.

I want to catch more rock fish and maybe an occasional bass around the kelp beds. If you had to choose one, Squid or Chovys?

Sometimes, you have to go all in, no matter how she feels about it.. lol.. could go make a few big smelt first... Or grab a fresh YFC at the dock before you head out.. like I say, the 3-4$/# market shrimp work great, and sheephead love it. What kind of rig are you throwing it with?

Learn from the deck hands, they know what is up, out there every damn day.. when you are ready to buy a starter saltwater setup, let me know. I keep a couple in working order to offer to the new guys cheap, help you get started. Things to ask:
How to pick a good bait
How to know when you are bit and what to do when you are
How to operate the rental gear (listen carefully to this if you rent gear, if you bring your own, SPOOL WITH FRESH LINE IF AT ALL POSSIBLE)
If you have issues or questions, ask, they would MUCH prefer a rookie asking questions to an old hand who has no idea and acts like he knows everything
