Been watching boat counts lately and noticed chubasco's been killing it. So decided to hop onboard for a 3/4 day with fishB4work and man was it worth it. Pretty much non-stop action for first 3 hours. Filling bags with assortment of rockfish and sculpin. On first drop I landed the biggest red of the day. Picked off 3 more decent sized reds during those first stops and an assortment of little guys. Just before we were about to change gears and target something further south. I hooked into something big. Fought the whole 300 ft up. Turned out to be big ling. The tape on boat only went to 28 and it was well past it. I'd guess at least 32in.
Down south there wasn't nearly as much rockfish but captain said he saw plenty of whitefish and it was time to fill bags. Change to smaller hooks and smaller bait. We had brought some shrimp so I was just tipping my hook with small pieces of shrimp and pulling up whitefish on every drop. We ended in shallows near kelp before calling it a day.
Lots of rentals out on our trip but pretty sure we helped fill their bags too. Captain Sean and deckhands were super helpful and would definitely go again. Only thing that could've made the day better was a jackpot. Would've been nice to end with extra cash on hand. Can't win them all I guess.

which one did you go on? Tried new seaforth recently too but it was super slow and crew was not helpful at all. Chubasco was best one so far this year.

I went on the Reel Fun out of Dana Point. Because they have all good areas around Dana Point closed Because of oil spill, we had to travel 11 miles south on a half day boat. The crew were helpful, just slow fishing. This is the fish count, I caught the two reds, two sculpin and the bodaccio

Nice report. Some good eating stuff right there ! Did you not win the pot because you didn’t buy in, or did someone edge you out with a bigger fish ? That Ling would have been a contender, I would imagine.

they just didn't do a jackpot. I'm pretty sure it would've won had there been one. sounds like chubasco just doesn't do jackpots.

Interesting.. That’s boat has been around for quite awhile. I was given an older wooden long range box full of tackle a few weeks ago, and it has a couple of Chubasco stickers on it, along with a Red Rooster sticker. Both stickers say , “lee Palms Long Range Sportfishers “. Lee Palms must have been the original owner of the boats I’m guessing. The box and Tackle are from 70s-early 80s.

Riding back up from La Jolla right now on the Chubasco 2, yes that’s right La Jolla lol our last stop was in the cove right in front of the condo haha. First stop we got limits of sculpin and quite a few small rockfish, nothing very big. Second stop we got some better reds and whitefish. Then captain says ditch the rockfish gear guys we are going to La Jolla for bass and maybe yellowtail. Boat got some decent bass action with some sheep mixed in. I also got 4 small bonito on a 42g colt sniper, so did everyone else throwing small jigs. Good numbers but nothing too big. Not a bad day
