Thanks to generous intel from Easy619, we headed south of OB on Saturday (3/21). We found a safe area where we could cast into a hole that was semi-protected from the waves. Even though part of it had a nice layer of foam, we dropped our line underneath and quickly pulled up an 11" opaleye.

We had another one fall off the hook as we were lifting it out of the water and then caught a 10" opaleye a little while later.

We didn't know opaleye could change their color, but the dark opaleye that we put in the bucket (to admire before their later release) became a lot lighter in color after (first opaleye shown below).

We also enjoyed catching some kind of blenny (we think). It didn't look the same as the largemouth or rockpool blennies we've caught before, but not sure... If anyone knows for sure, we'd love to hear!

    Levi also enjoyed microcrabbing!

Speaking of micro, I had a chance to try on my new MICROSpikes to be safer walking on the rocks. They weren't cheap (about $60 on Amazon), but they worked AWESOME! Definitely worth every penny. I was able to walk on all kinds of rock regardless of color or normal slippery level, and they gripped incredibly well. They're stainless steel, plus super easy to put on over my shoes. Some of the Amazon reviews mentioned wearing them on slippery river rocks, but I still wasn't expecting them to work this well. I just took them off before heading back on the concrete trail and sidewalk.

Very nice fish there.. solid outing. Eat one of those opaleye sometime if you're inclined, they have great flavor, even if the texture puts some folk off...

Thanks for the tip on the opaleye flavor (and texture)! We may give it a go one of these times. I'm the only one in the family that likes eating fish (or the smell of fish cooking), so it's been a long while since I brought fish home to cook. Of course my wife says that if we ever catch a halibut... bring it on home! =)

Thanks again!! Learning from you, Werfless, dj thrillz, and so many others on SDFish has be a great experience for me and my son. It's been a great time getting out every week and not having all the skunks we used to have!

Some of the best local sashimi. If you are into that sort of thing.

I haven't tried opaleye sashimi yet, I've heard many mentioned it around the web. I like opaleye and I like sashimi, might have to give it a go

Nice family friendly report... Great to get out with the kids.. Love it!... Thanks for the very informative stuff on the Microspikes, even though I'm well past my rock hoppin' days...
