Aug 2019, I had a chance to fish for carp below the CJ Strike Dam in southern Idaho on the Snake River. I camped out in the Scout Park Campground just a few feet from my fishing spot. In 26 hours of fishing I caught 49 fish. The heaviest was 20lb8oz and the lightest was 3lb2oz. The average weight was 11lb14oz. The median weight was 13lb8oz.

49 fish?! Wow. When I was there two years ago, the tailrace was full of some of the most beautiful blackish-orangeish carp that were jumping everywhere.

But I would’ve never thought anyone would catch that many in almost just a full day of fishing.

Did you see any sturgeon breach?

The 26 hours of fishing was spread over 3 days. I saw a few, but not many, breach in the fast water near the power plant discharge. I saw only one guy fishing for sturgeon while I was there. On a previous trip I saw a fella catch a sturgeon.

That’s awesome. I really wish I had been able to spend a little more time at the CJ Strike dam when I was there and get one of those giant sturgeon!!!

I actually thought about going there a few weeks ago. But man, the heat down there in the summer is something especially with the lack of wind and that huge dam. Pretty stifling!!! :)

I only caught a couple of smallies on jerkbaits in the middle of the day and then told myself I was heading to Wyoming. Had been in south Idaho for 3 or 4 days at that time and by then I pretty much had enough of that heat!!! :)
