Last evening I had the distinct pleasure of fishing with "The Coach" aka Daniel. We met up at WIndnsea beach for some lessons on how to fish a hybrid of surf fishing. Most of you know that I am a noob to San Diego fishing, so I jumped on the opportunity to fish with Coach when he offered.
Let me tell you. Over my years of fishing, I discovered that there are guys that talk and there are guys that do. Daniel is definitely the real deal when it comes to knowing how to catch fish, and he readily shares what he knows!

We met up on the beach and perched on a flat rock. Coach was already tied up and casted out in an area that he pointed out to me as a fish holding spot. (he clearly knows how to read the water and freely passes out the information so even I could understand). He hands me his rig as he takes mine to show me how to tie up and says..."You should be getting bit any second." Just as he says that, I feel the satisfying tug and lift the rod tip. Coach just laughs and tells me to keep tension and steer the fish in over the rocks. Fantastic.. I haven't even been on the water a minute and already have a fish!

The rest of the evening went pretty much the same with constant action and great lessons along with some very funny stories sprinkled in. We ended up with some nice fish and a heck of a lot of education for me. The only thing that Coach asked of me was to pass on what I learned and to take someone else out fishing! Now that is a stand up guy in my book!

If any of you ever get the opportunity to fish with The Coach, jump on it. He is not only an absolute wealth of knowledge and fun facts, he is also a heck of a nice guy and a real champion for the resource and our sport.

Thanks again Daniel for a most educational and fun outing! I hope we can have the opportunity to fish together again.

Tight lines guys, and as The Coach advocates, take someone less experienced than you fishing, share your knowledge and help them grow to love the sport.

Was a good time, right there.. four species for me. Wrasse, black perch, varmint and a lone sargo, not a big one, still big enough for the pan. It was a nice session with a great sunset, a few fish of several species, all in all, not bad for less than 2 hours with the line in the water, lol

Also goes to show that the basics work best. As Werfless says, what he does isn’t complicated, and it’s true, super simple stuff. Yet, it does take time and it produces. just learning from others such as himself and spending time on the water, you begin going catching instead of fishing if ya catch my drift haha.

I am forever grateful for the knowledge he shared when he offered to fish with me.

I have two gallon zip lock bags in my freezer of left over rice and whatnot....and the trimmings from my skippies. Think I may have to clear some space.
