Looking to take my son out to the CO River for some Yak fishing. Never been out there and looking for somewhere that'd be safe to take a teenager, and hopefully let him catch some fish. Trying to get him hooked on fishing in general, and kayak fishing specifically.

Located in East County, somewhere not too far from the Ca/Az border would be best for the first couple times.

Any recommendations on launch spots and locations to fish that are out of the way of the D-Heads flying around on the water?

Would be forced to hit it up on a weekend unfortunately.

    Thanks for any info guys!

Sqwaw lake would be a great place to start. There are a couple backwaters real close to explore without having to trek to far into main current ,Google earth. Another spot even more chill with far less boat traffic is bettys kitchen above Laguna dam just south of Sqwaw. Holiday weekends are the worst as far as dbags go.

Another awesome place is oxbow lake or Palo Verde. Its towards Blythe though but can be awesome fishing. Its an old part of the river that formed a lake after currents cut it off...hence the name Oxbow

Oxbow Lake off Hwy 78 just south of Palo Verde can be great at times. Bass turn on as it gets warmer. Good area for throwing frogs in the cattails. Great for bluegill and catfish most of the time plus there is a free campground there. The old Oxbow channel is much deeper too. (15’) and no speeding boats. It costs $10/day to launch at Squaw Lake but there are many more acres of little channels and small lakes to fish from a kayak

No matter where you fish on the River this time of the year Horseflies will be bad. Use plenty of DEET.

Thanks for all the info guys, still in the process of checking them all out. The game plan is to start at Squal Lake, then maybe hit Betty's Kitchen and possibly Mitry. Still need to look into Oxbow Lake.

Do you guys have a go-to bait for Bass, this time of year?

Also, we have our Ca fishing license's, what would we need to do to be legal on the river in Az? I saw somewhere that they accept our Ca license, as long as we get a Az stamp as well. Sound right?

5” Senkos or creature baits on a weedless jig trailer in green pumpkin/black flake are great baits this time of year. Also Whopper Plopper early morning over the grass beds and frogs fished where trash and dead cattails create a mat against the bank. You can fish any of the lakes adjacent to the river with either a California or Arizona fishing license and they did away with the river stamp so that is no longer needed.

Sounds like a solid plan, the AZ stamp is no longer in effect. Everywhere you were good before with the stamp you are now good with just a California license.
