Got her on a sand crab pattern from Stroud’s on a sinking line, what a fight! Didn’t measure her but estimate 20”+ and 3.5 to 4lbs, she had big shoulders.

Which bay? I only started catching them last summer and only found them in the surf. This is quite the fatty!

Mission bay. I started at the surf during minus tide but surf was too big and choppy so went to the bay, and a few casts later hooked up. The guy fishing next to me with live shrimp also hooked a bean on spinning gear shortly after I landed her. Must have been a school moving through the area. What areas are you having success?

Awesome! Such a fun fish to catch, especially on light gear. I've had luck at Mission and Pacific beach last year on ghost shrimp and sand crabs. Couple weeks ago I got some perch and yfc in OB and my buddy next to me landed a small bean. I'll be out tomorrow morning, hopefully the weather's all cleared up.

So then what sinking line do you normally use in the bay? I'm trying to get set up for bay fly fishing but all I have at the moment is floating line.

The ideal setup is probably a floating line, intermediate sinking and a fast sinking line all on separate spools that you can change out as needed so that you can target the various water column depths depending on conditions. Barring having all those then fast sinking will probably suit you well if you are targeting bottom dwelling species, such as spotties and halibut. The bays can have strong currents and fast sinking can help with not getting your line pushed around as much under those conditions.

That's what I'm headed towards foing eventually but for now I only have 1 reel. Do you know of a good inexpensive saltwater fly reel?

Lamson liquid. $160 for a reel and 2 extra spools.

That's awesome! Thank you so much! What brand of fly line would you recommend for floating, fast sinking and mid sinking?

I use Rio. Better info from Craig at Strouds on Saturdays.

Thanks for all the help man, I really appreciate it. Kinda difficult to find specifics about San Diego fly fishing. All of it is about Florida.

CraigSmith has written a TON of info on this forum, including articles for the local clubs. You can dig through all his posts, here are some fly line specifics (here) (here) , or you can message him for his PDF articles. But it's probably easier to talk with him directly at Strouds.
