I was in Oceanside and got lucky catching my first corbina today on the most ghetto pole I have in my arsenal. It didn't have enough line so I wasn't able to cast over into the sweet spot over the waves breaking. I used a c-rig with the biggest sand crabs I could dig up. Next time I am taking the good rods to cast farther.

You know the sweet spot is literally just in front of you right?

Well I wanted to cast it out a little further, for any species. Every cast I made would reach the end of the spool, due to bad prep on my part. The way the water was moving today I just had that feeling the fish were sitting 5 yards beyond where I was able to cast.

I’ve gotten 7 Corbina so far out of the last 4 sessions using 15lb Braid for main line with a foot and a half 10lb Flouro leader and 6 or 8 mosquito hook. I’ve had strong hits that couldn’t get a hook set, which I figured out was bad hook placement in the sand crab. Also pulled out two stingrays and two yellowfin croaker with the same rig. I start with a loose drag and tighten once I’ve gotten a good set.

This is a very difficult aspect to grasp for most people, myself included.

It’s usually not sunk in until you have them swim between your legs or have them skim past you, that you realize that this is a shallow feeder...

When I first started surf fishing I always thought you had to reach the outer breakers to find the real fish. A nice group of guys took me under their wings from another forum and forced me to open my eyes. I was amazed... now I’ll only launch my casts either if I’m bored of catching perch, or if there is nothing going on inside 50 yards.

I found out early on and tell others that if you are mid thigh deep , turn around and cast back towards the beach . If sight fishing a GOOD pair of polarized glasses is imperative for seeing them in the thin water . Watch the feeding pattern and put the bait right wear it rolls with the surge and comes to them from a few feet in front , even if it means putting it up on to the sand to start with . If you are off to the side and keep the movement of your rod down they spook less , also clothing that matches the sky contrast / color , don't let any shadows fall on them ! Good luck

Last Thursday I caught one and when I released him he parked his butt right next to my foot in about 6 inches of water. He stayed there until I got two more fish. Lol

He just wanted to make sure you found a better option in case you decided you wanted him for fish tacos. Very considerate fish.
