Bought some sardines and headed to the 9 mile bank in search of patties or tuna. No luck so we headed south east towards The Coronados. On the way there we came across a Mako feeding on a very large black seabass head. Marveled at that for 20 min and moved on. Caught some decent calicos on dines and 2 nice sheepshead and one trigger fish on shrimp. One bonito. No yellows. I got broken off by something that was not happy being hooked, it took off laterally like a freight train for about 30 seconds before it came undone. I figure tuna or a large yellow.
It was and stayed overcast, the sun never made any appearance. Water still green around the Islands.

So someone must have caught a Black that unfortunately died,
and floated and the shark is finishing him off?
That is my guess from that pic?

Yes. That was us. We’re not allowed to fillet on Freedom Boat Club boats so we fillet at the park and dump the carcass in the bay. You Should have stopped by and chatted.

Probably. Must have been huge, the head was easily 2.5 feet long.

Wow, that must have been a JUMBO black seabass. Nice camera work to get those action shots. That open-mouthed head shot near your motor gives me the creeps. Thanks for sharing!

FYI it is illegal to dump fish carcasses in the Bay. You could be ticketed by CDFW so just a heads up. Better to dump the carcasses in the trash cans there.

I don’t think it’s illegal for private boaters. But not 100% on that

I dont have a source, didn't do research just answered from memory. My dad was involved in commercial passenger sportfishing his whole life and has always told me that, so it may only apply to commercial sportfishing vessels. Most sportfishers will drift and fillet just outside of Zuniga jetty to clean their catch or just outside of Mission jetties entrance. If you have seen commercial sportfishers doing this they were breaking the law.

In any event, its not a good practice for anyone, especially far back in the bay or in basins. These areas dont flush well and even if you think thee carcasses will be cleaned by benthic critters, it still degrades the water quality.
