Hey SDfish, got my Coronado Islands trip report for ya!!! When we signed in on the grande, I grabbed my lighter calico/bay rod and started fishing of the bow of the boat. Second cast I got smashed by my PB spottie (16 inches)! First couple spots were duds, no more fish were caught until we pulled up on some cuda feeding on some bait. Got one legal cuda and put it in the bag, next spot we anchored up around 60 feet of water. That was when the fun began, got lots of calico (all legal) on a 2 ounce warbaits weedless jig head and a 5 inch calico MC swimbait. After the second calico was landed, I casted out and the bait hit bottom. After a few seconds of retrieving my bait slow and steady I got bit by something big, dead weight. Then it starts pulling drag, I thought it was a halibut they way it was dead weight. But I was wrong, it was my first ever lingcod and it was legal!!! I called for the gaff and the crew came over and gaffed that sucker without delay. Couple more calico landed after that and we moved on to look for yellows, when we arrived to the spot I tied on a 1 ounce slider rig and BOOM I was on. I thought it was a yellowtail, but it ended up being my PB Bonito!!!! Got more meat in the bag. The next stop was mostly cuda, but my dad called out “yellowtail on baby!” Fought it on a saltist 4000 spinning reel, and he got his @$$ whooped. Thankfully the yellowtail was gaffed and landed, and it was my dads first yellowtail!!!! Couple more stops with calico and cuda, nothing too special. We ran into a school of non-biting yellows on our way out, but no more fish were caught. Awesome day on the grande, and we got lots of meat in the bag!

    Thank you,
    Dat_fisherman.

Nice trip! Props to pops for whoopin that YT *** on a 4K spinning reel. I’ve seen it done before even on 3k and it looks like WORK. Good on him and you for smashing all those PBs. Most of all, good job to both of you for sharing that experience. I doubt either will forget it anytime soon, if ever.

Let’s just say my generation is filled with drama and I can see through it, like the fact that my generation doesn’t like rock music which in my opinion is the best. They haven’t even heard of Led Zeppelin!!!!!!!

Try a 3/4 day, it’s cheaper than a full day. But you could come across yellowtail and tuna!
