Friend I invited me to crystal pier today so obviously I went. Caught 3 Mack’s and 4 smelt. Slow day but I got skunked at Jennings the day before so I just wanted to catch at least one fish of any size. We both started off strong with me with 2 Mack’s in 5 mins and him with a round ray. We got interested in what smelt tastes like so we ate some out of curiosity. Not that bad surprisingly. I’ll give it a 7/10.

This is very cool Dylan ! Love the before and after cook pictures. The final product looks pretty damn good as well. You never know until you try, right ? Keep after it my man.

Both could be used as live bait :)
Not so sure about table fare...
Although, makrel in moderation is good for sushi

Stripped smelt is a great bait for rockfish. Stays on the hook and I like that iridescent blue look it has.

Stripped... meaning the filet/meaty part of the smelt. Striped smelt don’t exist, what you caught is a jacksmelt

Don't mind the bs Dylan 101 everybody has to start somewhere. I suggest you keep going as much as you can. Get to know the people that fish it regularly and don't be afraid to ask questions. Right now were coming up on the "off season" for the pier but there are still some good fish to be caught so don't be afraid to go. And when you do go and do good, don't go on here right after and post a thread. Allot of the regulars on the pier are sdfish members and will see your posts. They might not help you as much if they find out that you have been blowing up their bite on sdfish. Not saying don't post just don't be so revealing and try to be respectful of the bite. Especially if you weren't on it first.

Not any random person who see's that kinda thing can replicate it. That kinda thing takes time and dedication. You know this. They could care less if one of those fish end up on the web because no one will be able to do the same without putting in time. And im talking bout the kinda fish that stick around. No body is saying anything if there is a bite on sargo or something. I sure as hell know you aren't posting right away after one of those kinda bites.

Didn't get lucky, I don't post in a manner that makes my catches a big deal.. and no, I don't post every fish, that would get super annoying quick.. I even caught this amazing specimen this morning, but shh, don't tell anyone

We used to call those Warmouth, Werf. Not sure what they’re called nowadays. There’s a secrety pond or 3 heading out towards Ocotillo on the S-2 trail that was full of those “ Warmouth “ and bass to 6 lbs , back in the 90s. Super bright orange pec fins, and electric blue stripes from the mouth back. Otherwise jet black.. found the place on a hunch while driving to Glamis one year. Need to re-visit that honey hole.
