I heard that this is a good season for bonito, so I decided to try my luck. I bought a couple of small lures and threw them over and over from the end with not even a nibble.

A guy near me said he caught a bunch of mackerel earlier, so I switched to a size 8 sabiki tipped with bits of mackerel that he was kind enough to share. Still nothing.

Walking towards shore, I saw huge schools of giant corbina and tons of rays, so I switched to a C Rig with size 4 hooks. I alternated between frozen squid and frozen sand crabs. There was some interest, but nothing was hungry enough to take the hook, even though I was watching 40+ corbina swim right over my bait. Pretty disappointing.

    what did I do wrong?

I gave myself a 10 minute time limit, and right at the end while using squid, something grabbed the hook and started pulling like hell. I think I came pretty close to breaking my rod. Finally I wrestled this thing up to the surface and saw a beautiful leopard shark! I think sharks are cooler in the water than in my kitchen, so I would have let it go, but it was big enough to be a keeper.

unfortunately I don’t have a drop net, so I tried pulling the line up by hand. Halfway to the pier, I lost it. But still—leopard shark!!

And of course, my 10 minute time limit turned into an extra hour. You can’t quit right away after hooking a new fish!

    I wouldn't consider that a skunk.

Small leopards can be seen at the bottom of the pier. Cool sight to see.
