I was reading the reports and the ranger says there is a carp problem there. I have never seen a carp in cuyamaca before. I wouldn't mind catching a few to see how they fight. Does anyone know where they hang out there and how to catch them?

Heard around the dock. Bread balls work. I was on their site a few weeks ago. Saw if you catch and kill a carp you can stay and camp for free. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

Carp are tough fighters and will haul *** on the hook up.

However they are smart and have small mouths. Use a finesse presentation. In Europe carp are prized gamefish and the variety of techniques are amazing.

This 29" was on a #6 circle hook. The butcher knife is a 10" for scale.

Do you float the breadball or put a split shot on it or something like that?

Best to float if they are feeding near the surface. Key thing is there is no resistance if they try to run with the bait. No clickers.

If people go out there and feed ducks, start over there. Feed some ducks to get their attention.

Look into hair rigs and boilies to get an idea the carp world.

    Lots to read here..

Pay to help them with a carp problem? Not sure I would want to pay for something that is a whole lot easier and free somewhere else? If I had to do all that is recommended in this thread to catch carp I would not bother, nor would I pay for it.

That is why we are liking the river, at least for now. 12# line, single hook and no delay and reel in. They like crust also. We used a treble at first even with bent barbs and found it causes too much damage to the fish. So we went to single hooks and no loss. Today I bought the wrong ones a bit big and we got hung up in the rocks and lost 2. We still caught 7 (2 large) and one bullhead.

Nothing wrong with targeting carp. Good bait for the imperial valley, lots of people eat them also, delicious if done right! Wish the DFG would jusk ok them for cut bait/chum would solve the carp overpopulation easily, lol. Then we would have HUGE carp here in so cal

    *Rant on*

Carp are a foraging fish, water cows, not a predator like most game species. To catch them in masse requires different approaches which are not legal. Cannot chum to get them to let down their guard.
Limits on baits that can be used.
Can't fish by the feeding ducks where the carp are feeding also. :rage:

Cuyamaca wants them out but what are we to do with a 30lb carp if you aren't gonna eat it. Plus I have to pay to get massive amounts of fish I have to dispose of.

Don't get me wrong I'll grab a 5 lb for IV bait no problem.

We had a duck issue at the SD river, one of them just kept hanging around. So we would feed him one direction and fish another. Then one time we had some bagels and I kept feeding the duck and he got so full he swam off. It was so funny we could not get it to take anymore. Then 5 of its friends showed up got full and did the same. duck problem solved.

I used to think carp were just a garbage fish until this guy in AZ taught me how to cook them right.

Bleed them out asap put on ice

cut them in half and dry spices (curry powder) all over the inside

slice the skin and put the spices inside

put the fish in a grill basket over open flame

Let the juices drip out get it a little crispy

Then good to do... really changed my perspective on them.

Google up Masgouf. The Iraqis have perfected carp cooking.

People get thrown by the ribcage since they cannot be filleted like most fish.

I have the same thought. Someday I'm gonna hit Murray or Miramar for a big one.

Andrew Zimmern on Bizarre foods had some Masgouf and said it reminded him of pork belly.
