Shinna and I are packing up for our move to SD from Tacoma.

Are we gonna need waders? Since we want to surf fish throughout the year, do we need to wear waders for comfort?

Thanks, Pitch in any other recommendations.

No? the times i've gone more than ankle deep in the surf zone have been few and far between once I learned how to read the water structure.

In winter, when the big perch are around, it can be downright chilly in the surf..

You’re from a colder clime so you may be immune but it’s literally FREEZING BALLS if you go that deep in the winter! Seriously, I am a surfer too. After an hour my toes literally start curling up (I’m wearing a wet suit so testicles are immune to cold then).......

Year around? Yup you’ll definitely want to be getting some. It gets pretty cold when you’re wet surf fishing.

Summer - id say no for me
I’m from here and grew up surfing so I’m accustomed to the cooler temps.

For beyond September- for sure I will be in neoprene bottoms or maybe step up to a set of Simms this year.

This is from this week, approx 5:30AM, just under waist deep in shorts and a long sleeve...

Welcome to SDFISH and San Diego.
Funny our niece and her husband just packed up and moved to the outskirts of Seattle. I guess that everyone thinks someplace else is better. LOL
Enjoy your new city, lots of fun things to do here. Catch lots of fish, again welcome.

I'd prefer a cut up wetsuit.

Depends on if you want to be in the water or not. Most of the time I am fishing the surf now I am in pants and shoes.... Might get a little wet when landing a bigger model but I don't mind a little moisture then. Depending on which beach youre talking about, there may be other not so fun things in the sand (insulin needles is one) which is why I usually wear shoes now too.

But, there are lots of rivers north of here where youll want your waders to fish the rivers if that's your thing. But for the most part, if the sun is out youre good. I don't think most people are standing in the water to fish the surf. More of a run out when its a lull in waves, cast, then run back.

Yes. It actually gets cold here from time to time. I use non insulated waders.

If you plan on fishing for grinners or Ray's from the surf I would certainly suggest them.

No? I like the cooler weather, but I like to stay comfy too. They won't protect against the stingers on the rays, but Wouldn't be a bad thing to have in the cooler months.

If you already have 'em, why not? I get by with dive booties and bundling up from the waist up in the winter. The air temp and wind have more to do with whether I feel cold, winter or summer. Everyone's tolerance is different.
