If you have been thinking about hitting the River ponds in Mission Valley, just go ahead and skip it. On my walk to the pond I noticed a smell similar to the aquatic vegetation, as some of that stuff can be pretty pungent. The Hydrilla is so thick that its choking out the fish. Some areas in the ponds are completely full of hydrilla, bank to bank. I fished the pond behind Staples and saw very little activity. The water clarity in that area behind Staples has gone to shhhhhhhhh it. Spots I could see the bottom in 4 feet could barely see my fins in the water. After a few hours of fishing and no bites I decided to hit the pond across the street for a bit before I leave. Went under the street thru the tunnels and the stench was coming back hard. I get out from under the tunnels and am greeted with another pond completely choked out by the drilla. As I am coming to grips with the lameness of my choice of fishing spots I noticed a dead bass. Then another. And another. Then I actually started walking around and looking for more dead ones. Saw several more. And a giant carp doing its best balloon impression in one of the tunnels. Much different fishing hole compared to last year at this time when the bass were schooling and boiling on bait. After another 5 mins of gagging and telling myself to get outta that smell I bounced back to the house and a nice cup of coffee. Looks like I'll be making the trip out east to the river ponds out that way......Speaking of those ponds out east here are some pics from my last few trips out there. Seem like when I head that way I don't get the same numbers as I do in Mission Valley, but I always seem to catch a couple good ones. Out east the fish seem to be turning on and chasing bait. There are still some fish tucked up in tight to the tulles and in the vegetation.

Was recently thinking about going down there but you've saved me a trip. Thanks for the report. Back to the bays for me.

Years back I went down to the river below Walmart in Santee. Found the same thing... noting but Hydrilla. Might be different now.

Thanks man, I'm putting in the time, hoping that I end up on a giant river monster

Never been to it but all I have heard about it are good things.

Yeah, I was down there last week and recorded some big bass that got caught in the dead zone. The smell near Rio Vista was pretty bad and just worse heading towards 805.
