I had my kayak wired up at Fast Lane for a reasonable price. Had them install my Lowrance HDS5Gen2,water proof wiring, transducer, and hobie battery holder. The lowrance fish finder transducer fits perfectly in the hull. Put it in 3 years ago and I am still happy with the great wiring job they did.

Heads up for the PA14s, they are rigged up to fit Lawrence electronics perfectly.

From personal experience I'd use a Garmin Striker 4, you can pick the exact model but the 4 series is hand down the best bang for buck.

I have an HDS 7 - its a good 4 years old now and the new ones are much better and come pre equipped to run side scan smoothly.

Last year I swapped out the transducer and installed side scan. Because of the age of my unit it required installing an adapter box, and to get a depth reading requires both the side scan and my old transducer running together, so I'd have to hang the downscan transducer off the back. Here is a pic from its maden voyage in San Quintin Bay - I'm still not sure if it was worth it putting it in, need to play with it more - pretty neat seeing the structure off to the sides - but I found it difficult to pinpoint and stay over structure directly below me because I couldnt switch between modes. At last years Central Coast Rockfish Slamdown I had to use the GPS map to get back to and stay over a pinnicle because the sounder was useless as set up.

I haven't shopped for a unit in so many years I couldn't tell you if it would. If the bassman totalscan is fairly new I'd bet money that you would have no problems - the technology moves so fast the a unit just 2-3 years old is completely out of date.

I have a Lowrance Hook 5 on my tube that will get put on my Kayak. I have always used Humminbird and Garmin but a good friend recommended the Lowrance. Having used the three, I still think Humminbird is a better unit but Garmin has a good following and performs well.
