Went to new waters and within a few cast hooked onto a decent corvina. For a second I thought I was catching juvenile white seabass because of the shine they had, but they were definitely corvinas. Next cast followed by a hali one in short! Then caught 5 more clone corvina all on the LC cherry berry. A little after the last fish, my lure gets stuck. I lost so many lucky crafts this last week and I wasn’t ready to lose this one. Drop all my stuff and ask my friend to hold my rod. Swam out and got it out. Definitely a first for me. After the beach sesh, we went on my friends skiff in Oceanside and we arrived at our first stop. Before my friend can get the boat angled right, I felt a grab and I set the hook. Thought I was stuck for a second but it started moving. Immediately I thought hali! Was throwing a double rig hookup bait working it from the rocks to the skiff. I fight this thing really good with my ten lb Izorline. Ohh man I love the fight better from a boat than the shore for Hali’s. I pull this up and missed my first gaff short. I swear I thought I lost it. There was a few times that things went wrong and I’m surprised I still landed it! Taped out to ~25 inches. I feel like floating vessel Hali’s fight way better than surf Hali’s. This definitely fought way better than my 28inch last year from the surf. Some yakkers took over our spot after seeing me catch this hali and they were using live bait. After they pretty much took over our spot, our bite turned off and theirs went on. Ohh well what can you do, we don’t own spots. This morning I set a goal to catch a legal and I was rewarded with my first legal of the year so I’m happy to have some fresh Hali meat in my fridge. I literally kept everything from the hali, eggs, cheeks, engawa(I believe that’s how you spell it), and even the carcass to bake crisp later. Definitely found a new spot that I would have to think about adding to my route.

Definitely a burnt out kind of day. I downed a coffee around 4 and still can’t sleep. Woke up at 430am to start and surprisingly not tired still!

I released all the corvs. I still have one or two in my freezer so I’m good on them for a bit.

Thanks! Definitely was a sesh to remember. It was weird, my friend was using the same lure and he didn’t get touched. However I did loose 4 lucky crafts last week so maybe the fishing gods felt sorry for me >.<

There’s no corvinas up there? I mean some people catch them all the way in Long Beach. When you said NOC where exactly?

I’m just glad I had a good sesh after those lucky craft losses. One was a stupid I dropped it while in a yak and the other 3 were in one sesh. My lucky craft tackle is looking a little sad again.

That’s a fun day ! Congratulations on the halibut too.. those other fish really do look like juvenile White Sea Bass. Minus the bars.. the face just looks more like the bass, and I don’t see fangs ?

Trust me there were definitely fangs and an orange mouth. It had the white seabass shine but to catch that many without bars is most unlikely. The colors on the fishes was so breath taking. Picture definitely doesn’t do it justice.

Sweet Gaff hook cover. Is it connected to the zip tie ring?

It’s actually connected with the tag end of the wrap. The zip tie is just extra precaution for the wrap to stay secure just because it was my first gaff wrap I’ve ever done. Pretty happy with how it turned out. First time I used it on a fish. Ohh also the gaff minus the hook is 22.5 inches long for a quick measure then gaff.

Well, I should have said, very few... I have never seen any in Alamitos Bay or Huntington Harbor, and I fish there fairly often... But if they are here, they don't get caught as often as in SD... I have probably caught 30 variety of fish in the bays, but have never seen one caught there...

I probably would definitely keep an eye out for the grunion runs up there. Might raise the chances of hooking one up there

I guess the sharks and rays will have something to eat at least.

I have a gaff without a cover. Your post have inspired me in many ways in terms of end result and equipment setup. So thank you!

They were strong swimming off. They weren’t out the water longer than 10 seconds to take one measure pic and sent out. Easy to take them off the hooks. Fights didn’t last long either so they had plenty of energy getting sent back out. If they didn’t survive I’m sure their meat wasn’t wasted. I definitely know some soupies and sevens are local to that area so I don’t mind that if one didn’t survive, but I’m 99% sure they all did survive.
