I caught this fish casting a claw soft plastic lure on a light jig:

It had been caught before because I noticed a long length of monofilament hanging outside its mouth. The lure it had been caught on was deep down inside its gullet, unseen except for a swivel. As I slowly pulled, this lure popped free - a 5", soft plastic stick, wacky rigged using a circle hook and rubber ring (note the mono hanging down):

If the angler had used a larger hook and braid, it may not have gotten free. Hopefully the bass survived and can now digest proper food.

Probably just picked it up off the bottom and ate it. Bass definitely do these things

This fish caught in Yuma on lucky craft had a hook in the back of its mouth. Bass are undoubtedly tough fish. ED41E452-EDBA-4F26-8E93-4F50BF3542B3.jpeg ED41E452-EDBA-4F26-8E93-4F50BF3542B3.jpeg

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I made a fish pumping device out of a 100 ml horse syringe and tubinjg and got a 5" Senko out of a bass at Barrett that way. Have also seen plastics and even crankbaits in fish.

There is a possibility that someone gut hooked the bass and wasn't able to unhook it so they cut the line.

A good trick to removing the hook from a gut hooked fish is to pass your needle nosed pliers thru the gills instead of the mouth. This was shown to me by a fishing guide and really works.

I have seen sharks with multiple hooks and lures in their throats/mouths. Sharks appear to have a high threshold of pain.
