Wife likes to go, I guess I do for the pastries and food, but when we got 3 items from a 'farmer' I nearly fell over at the price. I had to ask three times. We got: 1 tomato, 1 small watermelon and 1 small cantaloupe. $16 !!!!

    !!!!!!

Ok, maybe my fault for not asking prices first - so maybe their business rule is "if customer doesn't ask, charge this much"

I do like getting the chocolate croissant, which technically are really petit pain au chocolat (my French background kicking in) and comparing them to other bakeries.

Just can't see doing that each week. It was good to eat, but at $16 I need to draw the line.

The hillcrest farmers market is the biggest one I've seen...it's like fishing tackle..you can buy at Walmart or one of the locally owned shops...it's fun to go the farmers market and buy everything to make a dinner..the freshness makes a difference...but yeah don't grocery shop there.hah

You could always grow your own. I would say putting in our garden cost easily $700. It has produced a bunch of jalapenos, some radishes, and a couple tomatoes. I'm not even going to price it out. :emoji_confused:

we do have a little garden with a few plants. This heat destroyed two of the few plants. I know we didn't spend $700 on it. I just get a few bags of soil and steer manure and turn the dirt.

Mine is relatively large, then those few bags of soil to mix ended up being buttloads because we dug down two feet, removed all the soil and added a gopher cage (not cheap), mixed the soil (ours is awful) with good soil and compost and replaced it, then skirted it with wood, organic fertilizer, and the plants. I'm not sure I even want to do it again next year so, yeah, waste of money. I expect to get tons of tomatoes, peppers, and corn yet, but that's still not much for what it cost. Next year I'm going to Vons!

I'll be going to the one in Little Italy this weekend, I do not plan on buying anything but the girlfriend is going so who knows. The plan is to walk around with the dog and get some brunch..I have a feeling I'll be buying crap though.

A couple hundred $ here, a couple hundred $ there...

Pretty soon, you're talking about money that could have been used to go fishing!

I put in a Watermelon patch in an unused part of my front yard for the first time last year. I fully expected that I would loose most of them to theft, but remarkably none disappeared. So this year I did it again, slightly improved in that I put drip irrigation directly to the vine roots. I also had every kid in the neighborhood put their name on a sign and they got to mark their own and watch it grow. The last kid took theirs home last night - I weighed every one as they were picked and wrote the weight on their sign - when I totaled it all up last night I came to 523.4 pounds for the 29 watermelons this year. Way more flavorful and juicy than the store bought. Can't wait to do it again next year...

Now that is something I can get behind. I have room for days but the soil here is the WORST. It repels water. And the gophers. But if I stick to my prepared spot it's gopher caged. Even mixing the soil didn't seem to help much. But, eh, it's like fishing...what I lack in knowledge ISN'T made up with my enthusiasm! :emoji_rolling_eyes:

We tried for 2 years to have watermelons, every time that they got about the size of a softball they were gone, even when putting a plastic create over them. They were in a fenced backyard no neighbors, I think that the racoons got them.

Racoons ate most of my Tabasco peppers. Left the tomatoes alone.

I don't want to hurt them, squirrels and gophers, ok.
On our last trip to Montana I bought a solar electric fence charger I'll give it a try next time we do a garden.

Camping near Truckee recently. Fetched a pail of water to clean up the breakfast dishes. Next I look, some crazy chipmunk had decided to go for his last swim.
