I came across this on western outdoors news and looks like it’s coming out in September along with a baitcasting version of the squall as well. I’ve read a lot of threads here praising the conventional fathom but how do you feel about a bait casting version of it?

It will be interesting to see the specs and parts blowup , Stainless gears ? Bearings on the level wind and idler gear ? Mag control ? Live spindle ? . Seems to me that as a late comer to the low profile casting reels they have a chance to set the bar for the competition @ that price point .. WR

Will be nice if they make a 500 size to have something that can compete with the tranx lineup.

I like the look of the reel. I will be curious to start reading some more in depth reviews on these reels in the future, as Penn doesn't have a track record with low pros.

yeah I can’t wait to toss some small irons with it. I’m just a Penn fan ha. Plus with supply chains all screwed up, it’ll probably be a while till it is really available. Love my fathoms though so I bet this one will be good too

If they can make it somewhat saltwater resistant they might be on to something.....

I bet it will be pretty darn good if they are putting it in to the Fathom line.

I'm a huge fan of Penn reels. Sadly, only the really high end ones are manufactured here in the US. I own several, and I've had very few issues with them. But I beat the crap out of them and really run them through their paces. If there's a chink in the armor, I'll find it.

I prefer daiwa/shimano for spinning reels but penn kills it with their conventional game... looking forward to your assessment

Fathoms are bad ***. I’ve pretty much dropped most of my Shimano gear for Penn. But The partner of Penn... Abu.. has left some thing to be desired. Mainly A steel pinion and a brass main. I’m going to pull the trigger on a 300 and see what happens. The are Korean made.

I have to agree. I bought a Battle 2, 4000, maybe around 5 years ago. I have hooked into everything from black fin tuna, Big AJ,s, 35-40lb kings, etc. Had that thing submerged many times and she still keeps rocking just give it some oil. i only had it serviced one time and it was like $30 bucks. there may be smoother reels out there but for the money that reel is solid.
