I have caught bonefish on the fly, but not with regularity my success has been on orange/sage size six clouser short jerks while drifting or a squimpi same size and technique with sink tip 5wt lines how bout you?

I've only caught one, myself, and don't really recall how I was retrieving. It was on a pure white clouser. But in general, I've noticed that when I've increased the length of a pause (in between quick 3-6" strips), I get bit more often.

I've been tying the last week or so getting ready trying to up my Bonefish numbers tying Crazy Dads and deceivers to add to my clousers. Tying 0729191519.jpg 0729191518.jpg 0729191515.jpg with synthetics now they last longer and I think they look prettier

I think I've gotten them on just about every type of fly (and bait) I have in the boat. Most have come on some sort of clouser variant in orange/white in the 2 to 3" range, Mind you, that may be because that's what I'm tossing 99% of the time. Back when I threw more plastic, I used to get a lot on the city shrimp color of swimbait in the 3" size. Generally, I fish slow and low, but they will hit a fast retrieve (at least in the shallow water we're usually fishing). Craig's been with me on innumerable multi-bonefish days... maybe he can refine my recollections ;-).

    Let’s see. Retrieves for bonefish

I have caught bonefish using the following retrieves/presentations:

Cast out. Get bit while fly is sinking.

Cast out. Get knot in shooting line. Untangle line. Bonefish is swimming off with fly.

Cast out. Let fly sink. Then slow twitching retrieve.

Cast out. Let fly sink. Then slow twitching retrieve with occasional pauses.

Cast out. Let fly sink. Then slightly quicker tugs of 3-6 inches with occasional pauses.

Cast out. Let fly sink. Fast 6-12 inch pulls with occasional pauses.

All of the above without waiting for the fly to sink.

Cast out with fast 1 to 3 foot strips. Yes 1 to 3 feet

Then there is the fish eats fly when it accelerates during a rollcast to lift a sinking line out of the water.

Oh. Then there is the I’m in the middle of a retrieve and Tomáso hooks a nice corvina or halibut that I have to net because he hasn’t figured out how to clench a net handle in his teeth like a cigar. So I set my rod down with the fly still in the water to net his fish. Meanwhile bonefish is trying to make off with my fly, line, and rod/reel ( unsuccessfully).

And probably a few other ways I can’t remember right now.

Over 25 years, most have been caught on chartreuse/white clouser minnows but also most other color combos including all black. But have also caught them on various crab patterns, merkins, rubber legged thingies, mini puffs, anchovy like streamer patterns and flies as simple as some dumbbell eyes and a rabbit zonker strip tied to a hook.

In my opinion/experience being in the right place at the right time is more important than the fly.

Now there have been plenty of times when fishing with Tomáso that one of us catch’s 2 or 3 or 4 pretty quickly but the other angler isn’t getting any bonefish. Even the we are about 8 ft apart.

Which leaves me to believe next most important is the retrieve that might trigger them at the time. Fly pattern is last.

Thanks Craig and Tomaso you two are probably the leading Bonefish gurus so it helps a lot. Since I didn't have orange and white clousers I tied them hoping to get a Bonefish this week Wednesday or Thursday 0729191914.jpg

Most of my bay flies are #2, sometimes #4. I use 60-deg jig hooks almost exclusively... don't really have a dramatic reason for this, I just like the way the look in the water. Note that I almost never actually FISH for bonefish... they just sorta show up while were chasing spotties.

Well myself Mel ochs, Mike Brown and Bob Smith fished Spanish today for over 50 bass and a yellowfin I stuck with the orange and white for three hours for a total of 3 fish till I went to the Crazy Dads and picked up another 13 in hour. But no Bonefish just get one 30-yard yd run really fast and I'm pretty sure it was a halibut before it came off. 5 weights 30-foot sink tips most of the fish on crazy dad's a few on clousers.smallest 0801190853.jpg 0801190853.jpg 0801190838.jpg biggest
