I won't do this but i notice that most legal spotties i catch have a notch or hole punched in the adipose fin, Anyone know why? Seems pointless to me and risks infection plus there's no id # to keep track of info, any thoughts or comments about this are welcomed.

Probably people who target them just want to know if they have caught it before. Any pictures?

I don't believe they have an adipose fin, but a better method for personal id could be a hi res close up photo of the cheek. You might be able to analyze the spot pattern, like stripes on a zebra!

I don't know if the full definition but it's the fin closer to the tail on the top behind the dorsal fin. But spotties have it all connected. So not sure if is considered that or not.

Cyborgstarfish I found a few but looks like they are healing (hardly noticeable), I rarely take pics while fishing but will next time I see it. I'm thinking it's tourney guys prefishing as they want to see how many legals are in an area, I see the most clippings on the portion of the Finn closest to the tail.

Is it possible to happen naturally? Good evidence though.

Wait I'm confused, I'm not seeing the clippings. I see the hole in the dorsal, but what are the other cuts?

That's interesting, I noticed that on a bass I caught a few months ago.

I cropped the pics but you can barely see it as they are almost healed, 1 is towards the top the other towards the bottom.
Check out DPevin thread perseverance pays off that beast has a fresh clip job.

Oh I see. I saw the clipping in DPevin's fish but wasn't seeing it on these. I've caught a few with the hole poked in the dorsal, but I've never noticed any full on cuts.

There might just be 1 angler doing the hole punch. Maybe they want to see how diverse the spotty population is in the bay and they're doing an experiment to see if and when they catch a fish they've marked. Is it cruel? I don't think so. Will it cause an infection? Maybe, but probably not. Is it an imaginative and perspicacious experiment? ABSOLUTELY! Especially if they methodically place the hole in the same spot on every fish. I think that would be very interesting.

I'm not a fan of them cutting off chunks of their fins. But the hole punch is a pretty cool idea.
