I just finished building my first custom rod. I attempted to turn a live bait blank into a surf casting rod. Time will tell if I wasted time and effort in making something that I was unable to find in production rod manufacture's product offering. I've got a detailed blog of the build here: First custom rod build - Nov 2020

I built it for throwing lures in the surf, my selfish need to be successful on my first session forced me to make the first cast into a body of water that is filled with skunk killing spotties. Two dinks later I was feeling pretty good.

Nice, i gave a very similiar rainshadow blank. Liferime warranty. They have plenty of strength to handle larger predators.

Great job on the build! Once you start looking at a rod for specific surf techniques here in socal, custom is pretty much the only way to go

Congrats on the rod. I also plan on building my first rod here in the next couple of weeks. I've got a few Rainshadow Steelhead blanks that I plan on making into surf spinning rods.

I like what you did with the handle. I bought a bunch of different colored cork rings with the plan of making a custom handle as well.

Making the handle assembly was the best part of the build! The cork is pretty easy to shape and feels great.

Agree, plenty of backbone on this blank. I think it would do pretty well at tossing irons.

I already have everything I need. Possibly more than I need, but I appreciate the offer.

not going to lie i creamed my pants on this one.

that;s gotta be the hottest rod i've ever seen.

just check out the metal caps. that's like the sickest thing ever

i mean i'm going to spend some serious alone time looking at that.

also would you care to wrap a rod like that for me?

Beautiful Keith ! Super clean and tidy.. Looks like you even nailed the epoxy coat as well. That’s always the scariest part of a build for me.. After you’ve gone through all the work of getting it to the finish coat, and you biff on the exact mix ratio, or you try to coat too many guides before the epoxy starts to go off. ( happened on my last restore abortion ) lol. Anyway, great job, looks real nice..

After laying hands on that rod this morning, Mr K got one sentence out about "well, there's a couple things I don't like"... Yeah, I just stared at him... Freaking guy cranks out a work of art out of the gate and then.... -shakes head-...

Thanks Jason. Biffing the finish is no joke!! I experienced everything you mentioned. The only thing that halfway saved the first couple coats was my heat gun. I really struggled to find the right amount to apply for each coat. But...it seemed like the last two coats went on a little smoother. Maybe because all the threads were finally covered. I used high build Flex Coat. I might try Gen 4 or Pro Kite next time.

I threw a salt pro bullet around 70-80 yards on my second cast and kept hitting that mark. I’m truly impressed.
