Success! I was able to catch my first bat ray! It was small but I was still hyped to catch one- thanks to all who gave me advice on rods/reels/rigs and especially bear6813 for all the specifics. Fished from 2:45 - 5:45 and caught the bat ray at 4:30. I missed easily 3 or 4 solid bites in the next half hour or so. I am wondering how long should you let the fish take line before changing drag systems and reeling down on em, since I’m thinking that’s how I missed a couple bites. Anyways this was species #64 on the life list, gotta get into some bigger ones next time though.

5/0 circle tied to a leader with a 3 Oz pyramid weight. And I have 2 spinning rods/reels each with the baitrunner drag system.

Great job man! Give it a few more weeks, and it’s gonna get really good. I can’t wait for Thanksgiving break!

Just about time for things to heat up in the back bay in a couple weeks.. as the water temps drop, the clams and shrimp come shallow....

There's already a ton of them off the surf in north county. When the sun is high, you can see a dozen on either side of the pier just past the breakers

They are staging to more into the bays and sloughs to follow the clams and shrimp as Coach pointed out earlier. Now is the time to get your tug on, ok that just sounds wrong lol

I use PENN BATTALION surf casting rods. 12' Heavy- fast action model rated 50-80lb braid and 6-12oz. I can throw an 8oz Sputnik and a 1/4lb of fresh mackeral head 100yrds all day. The rod is a beast, great tip for detecting the bottom and bites with all the back bone you need for big Ray's and sharks. I have three of them, the other 2 are paired with a Torium30 and a Saltist 40. Full spools of 80lb power pro with 30' 80lb fluoro leader tied to the braid with an FG knot
