Never seen those before. Looks like a sculpin on a diet.

It's really good in fish soup, the meat stays firm and and is great at absorbing the flavor of spices.

Is this a midshipman? It was caught in Estero Bay down here in Ensenada. We think that is what it is. Just never seen one in this bay before.

Hard to tell without a bottom pic , but I'd say yes.

It had a white belly which is the weird part about it. The guy who caught it said he had never seen a midshipman with a white belly.

Could it be a stargazer? I had someone tell me it might be that, and I found some photos that look identical to it which are labeled stargazer on google.

If you ever have any doubt of fish species , always take a picture of gillrakers. . we would need a better pic for certainty in this case..

Ok. There are more pics. I just don't have them yet. I will post them when my buddy passes them along. I was not on the boat when they caught it. They posted it on a local forum on facebook here. The guy is a captain in the bay here and knows his fish pretty well. He said he did not think it was a midshipman because he has used those as bait for sharks in the past. He said this one was different and he would send me better pics when he has them.

Like others have said, more pictures would help, but that picture above sure looks identical to the picture below, which is a stargazer...

I'd say it's definitely a stargazer based on the striped tail. Thanks for sharing. That's an interesting fish.

Yes, and that's definitely not a midshipman based on body alone. Too hefty upfront.
