    Scorpionfish (aka: Sculpin) FYI, it's spines are venomous. Handle with care.

    Cool. But I was hoping for a new species since sculpin is the only rockfish I’ve caught before lol.

    Could be a white seaperch. There are tons of 'em in Mission Bay (some years). Maybe they turned up in the big bay this year...

    I believe that’s a juvi spotfin, yes or could be a white croaker.

    White Croaker. Aka: Tommy Croaker, Tomcod, or ...!
    They were once the predominant catch a few decades ago, especially when halibut fishing along the sandy shallows. Btw, what size you have there would be a great live bait for butts.

    So not a fish, but I hooked this thing in the channel opposite Dog Beach; that's a four-inch bait for scale. Soft but firm, just about the size and shape of a baseball, and there was purple goo on my pliers after I took the hook out to release it. Is it some kind of simple animal like a sea cucumber? Maybe a shell-less mollusk species?
