Caught several of these last week at shelter. Tried looking up what it was and failed.

Okay guys I have a weird one. It was not a fish but a species I witnessed in the big bay thr other night in a well lit area... No pictures or videos. There were tons of brown worm looking things swimming close to the top of the water that could be anywhere from an inch to more than a foot in length.. They would sorta spiral through the water if that makes sense? The crazy part was that they would just randomly explode into dust... I have been researching for days and have not been able to find out what they are... I dont think it was midshipmen

Do they explode like this?: Exploding Worm, Night Dive Cozumel, Mexico
Possibly an epitoke of a bristle worm or any type of worm around here that can preform epitoky. I also saw someone's Instagram story with something like you described and this (Nereidae Epitoky at Breakwater Monterey, CA) looks very familiar.

Before I saw that video I was going to ask what you were smoking! "Spiraling through the water", great description... and then they disintegrate! WOW!

Perhaps it just ate some exploding worms.

This is a first for me, never seen or heard of these. Interesting.... I wonder if that worm can teach my wife the disappearing act!
