Ocean whitefish. Common inshore fish.....but I had no idea what it was when I pulled it out of Mariner's Basin. ON a ghost shrimp, of course. I showed the photo to several people at a Batray Bayfest; Ed Ries squinted at it for a minute and prounounced it an ocean whitefish. Compare to the pic here:

Well once when I was a kid me and my dad caught a ton of fish at the islands and I wanted to let one go into SD bay because I felt bad. That fish was a whitefish... apparently it swam to mission bay.;)

Hey Evan, not to be a downer but if you don't know what it is take a picture and release it. Best case you caught and released a new to you species and can find out more about it when you get home. Worst case you keep an illegal fish because you don't know the regs and get caught, fined and the wardens take your gear. Bonefish in the bay are a unique thing to the area and there are not a ton of them. Considering they are not considered good table fare and are a great light tackle sport fish, please release them in the future.

Not being a downer at all bud. Im very new to saltwater fishing and im always looking for tips and insight so i take it as constructive criticism. Had i know that this species was rare in the bay I definitely would have released it. Im not into keeping any fish i catch, and i rarely keep anything for that matter. Thank you for the info and after doing more research and reading up on posts and info I know much more about the different species and such. Knowledge is half the battle so i appreciate the post.

Whew! glad you aren't a dumba$$ like most new fisherman who kill everything in sight sometimes without even knowing how to fillet the damn fish. Happy to know there are people that use their brains out there.

Thanks Evan for a positive response. If we could get everyone who picks up a rod to think through what species, how many fish and when they take or release them, I think a lot of our fisheries would be in much better shape.

Yeah some people buy a fishing license and are not even aware that there are regulations, I had people ask me is that a trout? When I'm fishing next to someone and I get a spotty or something. Thats plainly stupid. If you aren't aware of the rules and regs for fishing then I don't think you should be allowed to buy a license. I think a test should be issued before you can buy one, but then again seems like DFG just wants their revenue.

Cali Hali or Turbot? Sorry the pics aren't great but it definitely didn't have a diamond shape to it, although the spotty coloration looks to me like a turbot. C&R'd this guy out of De Anza cove yesterday.

Halibut. Turbot will rarely even get that big and will not have sharp teeth

Thanks, he definitely bit my finger as I was unhooking him, pretty sharp teeth indeed. Good luck out there!

A few dozen species have been left out. As for that initial post with the photos, the Black Sea Bass pictured is the Atlantic Black Sea Bass and not the California Giant Black Sea Bass (Stereolepis gigas). The fish someone posted that they were carrying by the rocks is an illegal catch and highly punishable. Admin should inform the individual and remove the photo. All fish of this species should be carefully released immediately after being caught and not taken out of the water at all.
