Hey everyone! I just got my fishing license and was a bit surprised when most bodies of water require you to pay for a day permit as well.

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations of fishing locations without having to pay for a day permit? I have my license with my ocean enhancement. A bit of a hike wouldn't be an issue since i'm in my 20's.

I appreciate the help - I moved from WA where I mostly fished for trout, but i'm looking to bass fish.

From my research, I've found Discovery Lake, and Lake Ramona, but curious if i'm missing some around the area.

I'll look into that! I don't have much tackle outside of trout and bass gear.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

Bass gear is great for the bays..light trout gear would be good for the surf..

Just give your stuff a good rinse after every session in the salt...check out some surf fishing videos for some setups but a c-rig with sand crabs or gulp is gonna be the most popular..on 2-4 pound test

In the bay, find a spot anywhere really..I like to throw big hammer swimbaits and am almost always guaranteed a fish...now that I said that I’ll get skunked next outing...

Trout and bass gear is fine in the salt, just have to be more thorough with cleaning it. There are heaps of ponds and little hidey holes around town too, mostly loaded with green sunfish, with bluegill, carp and bass mixed in, let me know if you want to head out sometime

Lindo Lake in Lakeside is kind of a carpy mudhole, but I've got a few small bass there. I wouldn't drive any distance to fish there, but if you're close....

Otherwise, check out any creek you can find that flows year 'round. Next time you drive over a bridge and it looks brushy down below....stop and check the creekbed for water. Even some that slow to a drip have some pools that hold bass. People who drive to fish in a reservoir drive over two or more "free" creeks on the way to a place where they have to pay. Small bass, thick brush, poison oak, rattlesnakes, ranked from most-to-least fun. Really not that many rattlers, but they do get your attention sometimes. People are pretty tight-assed about giving up their creek spots, though....because they're small fisheries.

The San Diego River in Mission Valley has a ton of bass. And a ton of brush and tules and homicidal tweakers in some spots. And figuring out where to park can be an issue.

Loveland reservoir is free. Gated, though, so your trip has to fit the "open" hours of the lake. It's a short but steep hike back up to the parking lot. Portapotties, trash cans, no other amenities.

Light-gear surf perching is picking up right now, and it looks like a pretty good year for it. A variety of species can be had, some pretty tasty. The best part is you can do it with an old spinning outfit that you wouldn't mind dropping in the sand.

There is a fish called a spotted bay bass (officially spotted sand bass) that are small but feisty, and abundant in both bays as well as lagoons.

If you have a float tube....it's a good way to fish the bays without having to deal with crowded shorelines. And the water's warm enough right now so you can wear swim trunks and avoid hassling with waders.

Lot of options....but everything requires a bit of experimentation and there are a lot of rules to figure out because, well, California.....

    Have fun...
