I want to fish the bay, is there anything I need to legally do that? I have my float, a certified life vest, and a whistle. Is there anything else I'm required to have?

Never had any issue at all. Watch out for the jet and water skiers, they are nuts.

Stay in the 5mph sections and keep your head on a swivel, esp in summer!

What do you mean by "keep my head on a swivel"?

That's good advice to stay in the 5mph areas. Thank you for that.

Sometimes when fishing, you can get so focused on what you're doing, that you get "Tunnel Vision". Not paying attention to your surroundings.

Head on a swivel = pay attention to whats around you. Notice any danger before it's too late

    Keep that head moving.

Fishing license. I guess that sounds stupid.. and it goes without saying, but you'd be surprised at how many guys don't even think about their license until they're getting ready to launch.

I know it had nothing to do with your "legally" question, but the guy who told you about "keeping your head on a swivel" is very right about that. Your total safety is paramount here. Don't think for one minute that others - regardless of what they are doing - have their focus on you and your best interest. They don't - and they prove that over and over and over...

    Have fun !

You are absolutely correct with everything said above. I take skiffs out all the time and know very well how inconsiderate people can be out on the water. Today, a boater was going more than 5mph in the 5mph zone and only slowed down after realizing he was nearing me, He said "good red flag" (So I guess I should have a red/orange flag.) Then I said "huh" and he said "No, really, good flag". I keep my orange life vest floating on the water, tied to the left side of my tube.

All in all, I had a successful 1st time out in the bay today though. Learned some things and had fun. I went to shelter island and floated from the beach area next to the "closed launch ramp" and went all the way in front of the restaurant at the end. It took me 45 mins of straight kicking just to get back to that beach. Lol. I should probably buy better fins. I caught a little under 30 bass from 7:40am-2:15pm. 1 halibut.

Ten times better than I did. I fished this morning on the tube at he Bahia. so many people on tubes and kayaks out there his morning. I probably caught about 5-8 fish with two being legal. Then I tried another spot for the sunset bite and it was basically garbage with only two fins I connected with. My float tubing mojo has disappeared >.< gotta get it back.

I was considering going to bahia/ mission point area. I guess I'm glad I didn't. Mission bay can be brutal sometimes too. I did have a 15" bass today and I grabbed my phone to take a picture and it flopped off my apron lol. So sad.

I’m almost tempted to bring a kayak paddle for those tough kicks back to the launch. I wanted to practice the go pro this morning, get about 30 ft from shore this morning and click my record button and then I see no SIM card. Ahhh!

I don’t know man. I think pigs will fly before they ever come up with a float tube with oars...

I would think those tubes that look like river boats that have seats would ideal for that .

What they should make is.. a float tube capable of holding a small mounted prop powered by a rechargeable battery. That's all I'm tryin' to say.
