Hi guys I’m planning on going out Monday in search of tunas.
    What pound fluoro is working?
I use the uni to uni knot when connecting fluoro to mono or braid.
What knot do you guys use to connect fluoro to hook?
What size hooks do you use?
I read the fish reports and their recommendations but I want to hear from those actually fishing also.

    Thanks!

Use the biggest they'll bite on but be prepared to drop down to 20 even 15lb flouro and #2 hooks.

I tied two rigs, one with 20lb and another 25lb. The 20 lb worked best for me.

As for the knots, braid to mono was with the FG, but be careful as it can be tricky to tie and tough to do on the boat. Recommend practicing and tying this one at home. Fluoro to mono I used a 3 turn surgeon's knot and uni knot at the hook.

    Good luck!

Was out a few weeks ago and did great with braid to 8' of 20lb fluoro leader. No mono, just braid to short leader. I use Uni to Uni knots on the braid/fluoro connection. I used size 4 hook with a loop knot (the hooks were not ringed). Here's a video on the loop knot I use:

Went out on the 4th. I used 25# mono to 20# fluoro & #4 hook. Went home with 2 yft.

Anywhere from #20-40 fluoro depending on bait size and how well they swim. #4 or #2 circle hooks.

Start with #20-25 at least. There’s been a nice grade of #30-40 YFT lately. Boats are starting to find the Bluefin again.

San Diego Jam knot for the fluoro to hook connection.

The deck hands were recommending J hooks for size 4 because the gap on a size 4 circle is just too small. Not saying it's right or wrong, just communicating what I was told. I used size 4 J hooks. Hook sets were not all "optimal" (corner of mouth), but I did hook them and did not break any off.

Thanks for all the replies. Helps a lot. Hope to come home with some YFT, maybe a BFT.

Owner #4 mutu circles work just fine for me. I’ve landed fish up to 70 lbs on them. I’m sure that hook could handle even bigger fish.

With those schools of Yellowfin with some Bluefin mixed in, if you hook a nice sized BFT with a J hook, you might get chewed off.

I’ve been catching limits on 1/0 light wire hooks and 20lb mono each time I’ve gone fishing in the past month. Flouro isn’t really helping anyone get bit after working a lot of picky and wide open trips this season. These fish don’t have the teeth to chew through 20lb mono anyways. Remember the more knots you put in the line the weaker the line gets. So if you have a knot that has 90% strength of 20lb you are fishing 18lb line. Then if you adding a connection knot you are fishing closer to 16lb line. Straight 20lb mono has been the go to for people who have torn it up.

Biggest thing on these trips is to get a really good swimming bait and to get it out there as fast as possible. Don’t try to fish to early on the slide either... a lot of people have been causing mayhem with that recently.

If you want to create a dedicated bluefin set up I would consider a flouro leader to mono and then braid.

Doesn't anyone care about catching those bluefin mixed in with those yellowfin?

Last trip I was on was a tough full day trip from about a month ago. Boat had 22 YFT and 6 BFT that day.

They were all cookie cutter fish in the #20 range but I sort of feel like I must have done something right to get one of those BFT bites.

Moral of the story is... don't fish mono to the hook if you want a bluefin.

    - Line: 20, 25, and 30/40
    - 3 turn surgeons for mono to fluoro
    - RP/Improved Albright/whatever you want to call it for mono/fluoro to braid
    - SD jam to hook
    - Hooks: #4 (for 20# line), #2 (for 25# line) and #1 or 1/0 (for 30/40# line)
    * I use J-Hooks, as I find it easier to belly hook the bait with them. You can do it with a circle, but its a bit more awkward and in my opinion you have the bait in your hand too long. I fish the J-Hook just like the circle and end up with corner of the mouth hook sets 80-90% of the time so I don't worry about it.

On that note, unless they are up boiling around consistently, or going wide open...you really should be just belly/butt hooking all your baits.

Haven’t seen a ton of stops where the bluefin and the Yellowfin are together and will cooperate. Bluefin that I’ve caught were on 20lb mono. They never stood a chance

I say bring everything you got. Its not like you can run to a store out there. I do the opposite as others and start with light line and work my way up, if at all. I rather get bit and lose a fish than not getting a bite and working my way down. Landing fish is a bonus, being out and fighting a tuna on light line is what I go out for.

    Yep, me, too.

Also, x2 for belly hooking the baits.
