Well I got out on the full day yesterday on the San Diego, the skipper was Ryan, and I’ll start put by saying it is very good group they worked really hard to get us on some fish,
The problem was the fish weren’t that interested but we did end up with 24 YFT not good numbers especially after Wednesday count was 225.
But I was the first person with a bite and I worked hard on getting him, it seemed like 10 minutes of fighting and James (great guy) was right with me the whole way and kept telling you almost got him in he saw the fish and said it looked like 25 to 30 lber and give one pump and as I’m winding down good by fish, what was weird was it didn’t break at the knot on my leader and it didn’t at the hook it snapped about in the middle of my 20lb leader so it pissed me off for sure, I thought well better luck next time the problem was, there never was a next time.
I didn’t sleep well, all I could think about was that fish snapping my line.
There’s always so much to learn, James noticed I had a 1/2 oz weight on my line and yell out he had weight on his line some of should try some weight.
I happy to see that my idea for putting weight your line without having to retie worked.
What I did was I took the rubber out on those rubber core sinker and put it behind my not to the leader it slides down you line and it worked great I also put a small wrap of black pipe cleaner in front of the weight so to protect it from hitting my leader knot.
James show me how he puts weight with a torpedo weight and a rubber band, I didn’t want that much weight he had people putting on 4 oz or so of weight. I did like the way he put the weight and I asked him to show, he did and now I think I’ve forgotten it.
If some can explain how it’s done I would appreciate it?
So it was kind of a bummer but at least I got to fight one.
We saw hundreds on porpoises and we tried fishing below them but nobody was hooking up so will pulled up and tried another spot, but it was starting to get late so we turned back for home it was about 3+1/2 Hrs ride back, got to see a incredible sunset, my phone hasn’t up dated to my iPad or I would post one.
I have never been on a boat that went out that far, I think 45 miles out or so, I still had a good time but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to sleep again without thinking of that fish.
They said it might be coming to a close for YFT unless you go out 60 miles so that would be a 1+1/2 day boats.

Ahh damn. I saw the low count yesterday, i was hoping you managed to get one. How tight was your drag? On 20# I set mine at 5.5lbs..id rather fight them longer than risk a breakoff

Shavings.. that sucks Vito. I was rootin for you man. So close yet so far.. I say jump right back on another trip and vindicate yourself. They’re out there still, and you’ve probably learned a lot of what to do next time.

I did learn a lot funny though in my head I’m not sure I remember how used that rubber band to hold the weight straight with the line.
I wish I could but we’re moving and don’t have much time or money.
I tell you if I won the lottery I could go out all the time I had a good time even though I got the skunk, I got to work my level wind.
Thanks for your tips to help me out.

Really glad u got out there, Vito! I was really rooting for you to bring one home... tough beat there man especially knowing you had delays/cancellation before this trip. Im happy to know that u tried a weight on ur line (per my suggestion! :D) when im assuming everyone else was flylining. When 99 ppl do the same thing and that last guy is doing something different - convince me thats luck lol. Sometimes its one and done, most times its one and none. If i can add some consolation to as why your line snapped where it did - one of those tunas in the school probably grazed your line as you hooked up causing a weak point. Just unlucky there boss, but take some joy knowing you got to see the beauty before it became a nightmare inducing beast lol. When u dont know what it was, makes it even more gut wrenching haha

Hoping for one more push of warm water after this storm...

After that it’ll be at least an overnight or 1.5day trip

Glad you got to fight one of those nice YFTs and bummed that it broke off. I'm sure this won't keep you from fishing again :) Keep with it and your perseverance will pay off. I learn new things each time I go out, but I don't go out on a sport boat as much as I would wish. I'm still a newbie. I'll be posting soon about my overnight trip on the Old Glory.
