My dad and I got out to SI at like 10:30am. Bait was extremely hard to get but we got a couple dozen. We went to harbor island where my dad hooked something and lost it. I got a big run on live smelt, and after setting the hook, the line snapped where the hook was (shark maybe?). The bite DIED so I threw whole squid and got a really good run, and the fish didn't get hooked.. even with a 7/0. When low tide came, we went back to the pier and the smelt were everywhere. I got a bucket full in like 10 minutes of quality 5-8inch smelt. We went back to HI and the bite was still extremely dead. We fished a couple spots without a bite, and we were about ready to leave. We decided to try one more spot, and very soon after, I caught a 20.75" halibut. Let that one go, put another smelt on, and hooked something big snagged on something. Got free of the snag and realized that it was a halibut when it got close. My dad missed it a couple times but we eventually got it into the net. It measured 33" and my 17lb main line was extremely frayed. I was fishing a 10lb leader all day but decided to switch to 15lb at the end. Good thing I did that. My dad got skunked. Slow day overall, but that big one made it all worth it.

I had one eat a small Halibut 6 feet from my Float Tube. Their entire mouth ejects out as they suck in their prey. It was a Discovery Channel moment but also had the hairs in my neck stand up. Much rather catch one off a boat!

Used a sabiki in the morning when the smelt were deeper and harder to get with the net. Later in the day when the sun was out and the smelt were higher up in the water column, I was able to get a whole bunch with the drop net.

Congratulations on the nice halibut. I'm surprised that you fish live smelt on 10#. Must look really good in the water.

Thanks! And yeah I used 10lb for the longest time. I guess it's because I'm afraid that smaller smelt we get in the summer will have a hard time swimming with a larger lb test. I can definitely fish heavily line now that there is a lot of big smelt around.
